This has been going on for quite a while now. If I try to run Scandisk from Windows, my computer brings up the screen that shows scandisk working, but the progress bar never moves and it never will get done. The same thing happens when I try a defrag. What could be happening that I can't run these programs? Scandisk will run in DOS though, and I'm running Windows 98. Thanks for any advice!

It's usually because something running in the background is writing to the disc, causing the program to always be restarting. You can try a ctrl+alt+del to close all running programs. You might try closing them one at a time to figure out which program is the culprit. I think the only ones you have to have running are "systray" and "explorer". An alternative would be to reboot and start up in safe mode and run them from there.
