: Networking Question...

Recently upgraded to a cable internet connection. Installed a Linksys Cable/DSL Router so that I could pipe the internet to both PCs I have at home. Works like a charm! My question is however, can I use this same router to "network" the two PCs? The one downstairs has a printer hooked to it and I'd like to be able to utilize it upstairs too.
Thanks!

Riffers.

Did u get the router with the built in 4 port switch? If so then run cable to your other machines install network cards in them use the DHCP server built into the linksys router and you will be off.

If you got the single port router, Buy a small hub or switch. Plug a cable into the router's rj-45 port and the other end into the uplink port on the hub. If the hub/swithc does not have an uplink port then u will need a crossover cable. Easily purchased at most pc shops.

E-MAIL me if you have questions.

Riffers.. YES... you just need to enable print sharing on the PC you want too share the printer from... easy too do

right click the network neighborhood icon on your desktop
select "Properties"
click the File and Print sharing button.
Check the "I want too share my printers" box
Hit OK then reboot.

then you will need too actually share the printer..

Start button > settings > printers
right click the printer and select "Sharing"
create a share name for the printer
hit OK

Then set the printer up on the other PC..

Add new printer hit next button
Select "Network Printer" next
in the address box type \\computername\printername next
then follow the remaining prompts..

Good Luck

Thanks for the help guys. Will poke around with the printer tonite. It's a 4port router, but I'm not aware that it has a "switch" built in.
Thanks Again!

Fred, it is a switch.. but a switch and a router in all effectiveness are the same thing.. However a "Switch" is more secure... Let us know how it worked out...

Thanks again...
Hoping to complete this either tonite or tomorrow night. I have the printer "shared" downstairs now. All I have to do is install it upstairs on the work PC. Will report back my findings.

Thanks again!

If the router doesn't have a DHCP server built in...

Enter 2 IP addresses (a different one for each PC), and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, do not set it so it gets these settings automatically.

WOOOHOOOO!!! I know I know, true to my name...but I was forced to get this fixed. Wife works out of the house and needed her PC backed up before letting their support group do some upgrades.
I FINALLY got it to work! Everything was hooked/set up exactly as you guys said. I was only missing one thing. Specifying "sharing" on the individual C drive. I had it specified in the network, but not at the particular item. So they were sharing, just didn't know *what* they were sharing. Now not only do I have print access to a single printer from either PC, I also have access to each hard drive from the other.
Thanks for you help guys, and sorry it too so bloody long for me to complete this task so that I could get back to you.

thanks for the update Fred. I've done the same thing myself, not sharing the machine and tearing the rest apart wondering why.

make sure and password the share though, otherwise you could be sharing with all of us. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Ok, had to resurrect this thread once again.
Got wifey a PIII 1.06 Gateway laptop, with XP. Has an onboard NIC, and I can surf the net on it using my home network. Question is can I "network" it to the other machines with the XP? This is the funny part, one machine has Win 95, another has Win 98 and now the laptop has Win XP. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Riffers.

Firewall!Firewall!Firewall!Firewall!

Don't rely on the Linksys router alone to protect your machine. With the c: shared on either machine I can get past the linksys and wreak Havoc on your drives! Install software based firewalls as well.

SECURITY is the name of the game here!!

If you don't absolutely need to share the entire drive then DON'T. If you need to share a few files then create a directory and share that.

Heads UP: Some firewalls conflict with XP and will not allow the firewalled computer to access the network. We fought this at work for 3 weeks with Zonelabs Pro. If I want to use this computer to access the printers or files on other computers I need to disable the firewall. BTW, Microsoft and Zonelabs do not acknowledge the problem on their tech sites we had to find a "MS XP sucks" site with folks that had the same problem to solve ours.

Orrie.

I have seen that problem on zone alarm several times. You are supposed to be able to configure the local zone to allow traffic to pass between other machines on your local network..buuuuut it never seemed to work right.

I took ZP off of my machines and am now running Norton Internet Security as well ans having my Linksys router.

I just added a hub to share my cable modem and also share files between two computers in my home.File sharing must be enabled to do this, but enabling file sharing opens up big security issues if your connected by DSL or a cable modem.Mke sure you have a good firewall like zone alarm (free) and take these two security tests. http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1bi2l2=003snppo

I have the same router with my cable modem. I currently have 4 PCs connected to it and run them as a network. I used to have 5 PCs connected as well as a HP Jet Direct print server. There's a port on the back of the router that will let you connect another 4/8/16/etc port hub and run more network connections. The 5th PC and the print server were connected to the extra hub.

Sharing a printer is no big deal but you do have to specify that you want to share your printer and files. The actual procedure will depend on the version of Microsoft OS you're working with. For example, the instructions given by normie are correct for Windows 98, but are incorrect for Windows 2000. You have to share a W2K printer by selecting the printer itself and opting to share it. Check Start > Help and search for printer sharing for your particular OS version. Not all Windows OSs operate the same so questions/replies should be a bit more specific about the OS being used.

I have W2K Pro on 2 machines, W2K server on 1, and Win98 on the last. I have one printer on the W2K server and one on my wife's W2K and I can print to either from any of the 4 PCs.

Up and running on all three machines as of last night. And I can print from any of the three, so long as the one with the printer attached to it, is turned on. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks!
