I recently reformatted my hard drive because of a bad sector and reloaded windows 98se and everything was fine.I run Sonealarm for a firewall and because of all the virus scares I purchased McAfee 5.x.Ever since I got it installed my computer is at a crawl. It takes forever for pages on the internet to load and my applications are very slow even when I'm not on the net.I think Safe&Sound has something to do with it because when I disable VShield it gets better but still slows a lot. What can I do Besides deleting all of McAfee and going unprotected?

McAfee Antivirus by itself would not be the problem. I've used it for some time without that symptom. I recently switched to Norton and noticed that if I load in all the Norton Utilities, everything slows to a crawl. I backed out NU and normal speeds returned. However, your firewall could slow things down a bit. It is one of the prices you pay for protection. The only way to find these things out is to go one at a time and test the time it takes for internet activities. Are you sure you need a firewall? IMO, relatively few people actually need one. I agree that if you have a static address, you should have a firewall. If you have a dynamic address, then you probably don't under normal circumstances.

I didn't have the problem with just the firewall. The problem started from the time I loaded Viruscan.

I've heard of people having similar problems with McAfee and Norton both but it only happens sometimes so it's difficult to pin down where the problem lies. I'd start by uninstalling McAfee to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you might want to try Norton instead. There should be a demo you can try before buying it.

The problem might be that you have Mcafee scanning EVERYTHING, web pages, all files and program files etc.. try adding common things too your exclusion lists.. thats most likely what's holding you up.. As well, if you purchased Mcafee they do provide support if you are unable too track it down.. Good Luck

I deleted all of McAfee and it still did it.I searced a little deeper and found that it was still running Safe&Sound from McAfee.I rendered it useless and everything is back to normal.I Will reinstall McAfee without S&S and see how it does.
Thanks

McAfee and Norton run a lot of unnecissary stuff. All you should need is scanning of memory while you're doing stuff on the computer (This catches the virus trying to spread) and a scan of executable files (exe, com, bat, pif, etc) during the night once or twice a week maybe (I never actually bother). That and some good email security is all you need (Use a text only email reader, for example).

Just a note for those interested: I use Antiviral Toolkit (www.avp.com) as my scanner. A lot smaller and faster than Nortan or McAfee.

John,

I agree with TronDD. I only use Norton 2001 Viru Scan. No slow downs.

Also, if you found a Bad Sector on your drive it is only a matter of time before you will have a failure. I would replace the drive.
