I took a few guys suggestions, a couple of weeks ago, and tossed up Zone Alarm. It's amazing how many people are trying to peak in my shorts. No trouble before but was getting tired of the breeze.

You especially need a firewall if you are thinking of going to cable modem
you can download a free trial version of Zone Alarm pro here (http://www.zonelabs.com/)

A firewall is like having a lock on the front door of your house. When you get connected to the internet via a broadband service (cable, dsl etc.) Your computer's "front door" is wide open and you'll think someone put up an "Open House" sign!! My firewall has alerted me 75-100 attempts to access my system files. I was able to deny access which prevented my hard drive from being taken over by someone else. I also believe after talking with my service provider's techs that many of the attempts were the "Code Red" worm trying to crawl into my PC...
I use a firewall called "Tiny Personal Firewall" (shareware) and it seems stable and is easy to use...

wow
i didnt know that someone outside could access my files.. this is alarming to say the least
can this happen with regular phone line access AOL (which is what im using now) or is it limited to high speed connections..and why..whats the difference?
sounds like a firewall needs to be VERY secure..
are they all secure or are some better than others...can they all be breached?
i am assuming that all firewalls then are software...but i have seen some kind of cards at comp usa that say firewall on the box...whats that all about?? is that related to this issue or is that something else?
which firewall is the absolute most secure??

Hey John,
How's Norton's firewall? My wife's work has authorized her a firewall and they recommended Norton.
Any thoughts?

A while back, an MIS manager I know, refered to firewalls as internet condoms. I think that's a pretty good analogy.

Matt, BOD, and others told me to go here. http://grc.com/default.htm
Gibson has some interesting things to say about firewalls. Zone Alarm got Gibson's nod so I bought a copy.
