: Dissing annoying emails

Is there ANYTHING I can do to rid myself of these annoying emails? Man I must have given my email address to some smut site long ago ( I cant remember ever doing it) and now, well, its getting annoying and disgusting. ANd most all of the "REMOVE" replies I send, get bounced back undeliverable.

I dont mind LLBean or Specials at the Outpost, but this "young cum" crap has to be eliminated.

Anything other than a email addy change??

I had to turn the E mail off to the screen name I use for my webpage and TC because of it. I tried to block all mail except for people I specified, but they got around it by somehow creating an E mail address EXACTLY THE SAME AS MINE http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif I guess you can't block yourself. It p***ed me off bigtime. I turned off my E mail for a month and just turned it on yesterday. One hour later there was a porn site add in my mail. I find if I delete them without opening them they stop sending them, but if I'd forward them to AOL or try the remove thing, it got worse. I hate these mother ******* http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif

I found that if I DON'T reply they usually go away. Once you reply they then know that the address is valid. Unfortunately, even the "good" emails like Windows tips, application tips, etc don't quit even when you try to unsubscribe.

Gene,

There are some e-mail filters (usually built into your e-mail client) but none of them are good enough to remove all the bad stuff and leave all the good stuff. You should be able to set up a filter that catches words like teen/nude/sex/etc... and automatically deletes them and that would probably help.

Gene,
I think a word filter would be just the thing http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Guys... there are quite a few things you can do... Whatever you do DON'T reply to any address in the mail. it's either dead or there to verify your address actually goes to a person. here is what you do..

get the FULL headers of the e-mail, this usually means selection the options with the message open and selecting view options/headers..

There should be an IP address in brackets or parenthsis the full headers should look like this.....

You'll notice a "received" line.. the IP address in brackets are "Verified" by the sending ISP.. This is the only thing in an e-mail that is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to spoof or fake in any way. in this case the originating IP address is (207.239.241.75) if you do a whois (a lookup on the net) it will tell you who OWNS the IP address, and give you contact e-mail.. Once you get that e-mail, forward the entire message (with full headers) to that address, as well also copy the following addresses atthe same account..

postmaster@address.com
Abuse@address.com
ipadmin@address.com
security@address.com

that will get you a few undeliverables but most of them will go through.. I will go into more detail later if requested.. Happy Hunting.. P.S. if someone is REALLY giving you a hard time.. e-mail me the details and full headers.. I have MANY tricks up my sleeve for handling spammers etc...

That is of course if you have a teen daughter at college, and is being asked to have sex with the football team, dresses as a cheerleader http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif in which case forward all of her e-mail too me (kidding)...

Normie, yeah for sure. I'll simply fiddle with filters first. The word choice is easy. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

The email client I use, Pegasus, lets me DL headers only. I can then tell it to delete or DL the entire message. Recently, I've been getting very long files (250k+) from people I don't know. No way I'll open them so I don't want to DL them. I mark them for delete on the server and they never get to my computer. Still, it's a nuisance.

Interesting...very interesting indeed.

Just one question...who do you use for your whois lookup? I've found a couple of sites that have the service, but was wondering if it's something you can do straight thru your browser?

Is it possible that the contact points that you forward the spam mail to in fact just use that to verify your address also?

I've been using abuse.net to forward the mail, and it seems I've been getting more and more spam than ever, and now it's coming to my main email, instead of my alternate yahoo and hotmail ones.

[Answer a little long, BUT I am a programmer and consultant. I'm just in love with Chevelles.]

1) Never answer unwanted emails

2) Trash immediately and empty trash frequently

3) never open files people send me like anything that ends with *.exe. If you did not program it yourself, don't run. It could do anything, including using yourr email program to spam others - or worse, install a tojan horse on your computer and then control your computer remotely.

4) Never click on links that allow you to remove yourself from a list. You are actually telling them your email address exists.

Their little spam programs
a) search about a zillion web pages, newsgroups, etc.
b) search for text "strings" that have a "." and a "@" in them,
c) parses out (extracts) addresses by finding a comma or a space or <> on either side of your address.

In short, they find you, you don't find them. Don't let them know they found you. They're testing the water so to speak. A lot of the junk you get are feelers, testers, and are designed to get you to repsond in some way, like getting you to remove for some ficticious list. Then they'll really hit you with SPAM.

When I use my address on the net, I often add ".delete" to my address:
'john.delete@someserver.com.delete'

Type your return address in your emailer with a "delete" in it. The human bodies you are interfacing with are smart enough to delete it when they want to send you a real message you want to receive.)

(Take note I did not type my real address tonight. http://www.chevelles.com/ are ncie people, but they can't stop people from visiting their site whose only goal is to collect email addresses.)

When I can't avoid typing my real email address, like when I buy from Amazon.com or use this site, I always read the page before I press submit to see if I can check "off" anything that will send me updates, or other unwanted mail.

In fact, when i register my software, like the rRealPlayer, and the software wants to send my registration, I never give them my real email address.

I hope this helps,

john

You can't stop SPAM.

Just ignore it. And be careful when and whith whom you use your email address.

Perfect example of something you should never replyt to. Something I received tonight. I wasn't even addressed to me:

Worst one I picked up lately was addressed to my address.
Message was "Bank of Trinidad"
"This email confirms the transfer of $6000.00 into the account"
Probably should have saved it but been on a killing spree. Completely freaked out my personal money manager (wife). Did a whole lot of checking.
Changed MSN passwords again after that one.
