: Gibson Research's Port Probing "Shields UP" online diagnostic program
Big O Dave Aug 7th, 01, 7:50 PM Have any of you ever gone over to GIBSON RESEARCH (http://grc.com/default.htm) and had Gibson's "SHIELDS UP" check out your computer?
I'm wondering if the results it displays are valid and if they provide meaningful info.
Big O Dave
Matt Smith Aug 7th, 01, 7:53 PM I LOVE STEVE GIBSON
Shields Up!!! is EXCELLENT and looks cool. I also hang out in his newsgroups EVERY day http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Sid Coleman Aug 7th, 01, 9:30 PM Works great!!! Every time I change my config (for some ungodly reason I play with my PC WAY too much {QUIET DAVEs}) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif , I verify my security with that site. Love it!

Big O Dave Aug 7th, 01, 11:36 PM I, too, play with mine http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif. And I've found GRC to be a source of useful info. I just wanted to hear from people who actually understand computers that it is cool.

larrym Aug 9th, 01, 9:13 PM It is cool. If you install a firewall and it passes all his tests, you know you have a good firewall. I'm ZoneAlarm fan for a firewall.

John_Muha Aug 9th, 01, 9:33 PM Ok Matt
What does that scan mean? My BIOS is shown open.
John
Matt Smith Aug 10th, 01, 9:25 AM John, you rang??? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
NetBIOS stands for Network Basic Input/Output System. It was designed by Microsoft to allow the Windows networking functions to take place. If you DON'T run a home network, you DON'T need that even there. To close it, go to Start -------> Settings --------> Control Panel --------> Network, and remove the Client for Microsoft Networks, reboot, and port 139 should be closed http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. NetBIOS can be dangerous without a firewall because people can use it to access your files from the Internet http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
Pat Kelley Aug 10th, 01, 9:29 AM John, if your NetBios is open, you should follow the links to that page. There are instructions on how to close that port. I can't take you through it, it's been a couple years since I did it. It has to do with changing the bindings of several network protocols. It's rather involved but not too bad.
Using the info from Steve's site, all my ports are closed and no information (other than IP address) is available to probes.
Using the info and changing bindings will not protect you from a backdoor trojan. I got one a year ago from a mpg I DLed. I didn't notice it had a double extension (*.mpg.exe). Sadly, windows only shows the first extension. Even with show all details on, the second extension is hidden.

Matt Smith Aug 10th, 01, 9:58 AM John, the links that Pat says to take are the ones you want http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. His instructions are AWESOME http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Matt
Don't have Client for Microsoft Networks as my Logon. Don't show it all. Figured I couldn't be that dumb all this time. That's why I got confused. Just a humble machine with a dial-up.
Pat
I'll try rebinding and see if that closes it. Been feeling a draft coming in for a while but just figured it was Big O Dave blowing air again.
John
Matt Smith Aug 10th, 01, 7:02 PM I agree with Pat, try Rebinding http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
ChevelleCLM Aug 10th, 01, 11:58 PM OH yeah. Windows 2K Advanced Server racks up a "stealth" score. "There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP address"
How Cool!!!!!

John_Muha Aug 11th, 01, 10:54 AM Rebinding closed my open port. Thanks.
Now if I can only figure out the difference between the junk everyone else has dumped on C drive from the files I need, I'll be a little happier.

I couldn't agree more. I know that my computer HAS to be running programs in the background that I don't need or use, but because I don't know what-is-what, I'm stuck http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif!

John_Muha Aug 12th, 01, 6:38 PM Did find a compressed mpeg file my boy must have slipped on the computer one time he was here. Quality was real poor so I dumped it.
Good thing the wife didn't spot it. Another thing around here I would have got blamed for. Even after they are gone I still get in trouble.
Big O Dave Aug 12th, 01, 9:00 PM A likely story! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/tongue.gif

Beldarr Aug 13th, 01, 9:32 AM WOW - my whole drive was exposed, pswd protected, but still exposed (11 items) and my port 139 was OPEN http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif
So I added a TCP Mapping to my firewall config for port 139 that gives back a response "go to hell"....Full stealth mode now http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
I tried this with the new mapping active & inactive, and got the different results as I should have. Tried it on a couple stations just to make sure, so YES, this link works and is the whip.
And this was on my company network...I'll fix my home setup tonight.
Thanks BOD, never knew port 139 ever existed...
