: Computer Condoms
John_Muha Aug 5th, 01, 7:33 PM Hey, if you opened this I have your attention. Looking for recomendations on how to prevent bugs.
What are the best hardware or software firewalls out there? My boy has given me some ideas but would like a few others. Maybe let some of the prono emails through. Still like to dream.
Gene Chas Aug 5th, 01, 7:45 PM John, I;ve had McAfee for the last few years on a corporate purchase. Its caught them all, as long as you enable the email /download scan functions. Did find a particularly onery one that the software couldnt delete. For a novice its nice to have support.
With a cable modem, I had a hard time with firewalls. Especially with a real time quote system that monitors response rate. The quote service kept shuttng down since the quotes werent fresh enough.
We're switching vendors soon, but McAfee did what it was supposed to do. I have no idea why BTW.

Tom Mobley Aug 5th, 01, 8:03 PM currently popular firewallm is Zone Alarm, it's free to individual users. Works great with an always-on connection like a cable modem or DSL line. I used it till I got ny little Linksys Inet Router. Just be aware that this is not a substitute for an anti-virus program. You'll still need that, Mcaffee, Norton, F-Prot are good.

DaveK Aug 5th, 01, 9:19 PM I've got the Norton software. So far it's stopped a couple of e-mail viruses and one unauthorized access attempt and it did very well against Nick's suggested web site.

McAfee is not much of a firewall. A great product. Been running them in the background for years. Keeping with my condom post, McAfee allows pregnancies to occur before they create the scan for the virus. Not complaining about them. Who knows what software will be written.
A touch above novice. Used to break protected programs with assembly patches.
Worked with a dude who collected MS/DOS viruses. Got mad at me for not giving him a variant of the old Jerusalem virus. Crazy guy.
Sid Coleman Aug 6th, 01, 8:10 AM Guys,
I'm running the Black Ice firewall by Network Ice www.networkice.com (http://www.networkice.com) and am very happy with it-good alarming, fast updates, etc, and easily configuable.
As for the anti-virus and stuff, I'm using Nortons Systemworks by Symantec-comes with Norton Antivirus and all the othe Norton utilities bundled. Have been with Norton from version 3.0 and love the product.
Also, good site to check out is www.dslreports.com, (http://www.dslreports.com,) has alot of good info on high speed connections, both DSL and cable, plus has links to various tools to check system securty, response, etc. Go play!

RickS Aug 6th, 01, 11:06 AM Software firewalls help but the only true way to be safe is behind a hardware firewall using NAT. I ran Zone Alarm on my machines before I going the hardware route and it worked great but I've heard any software firewall can be defeated. I had a friend that had a lot of trouble with Black Ice Defender (plus Zone Alarm is free.
I chose the SMC Barricade router since it was only $80 and included a print server.

Gene Chas Aug 6th, 01, 12:11 PM The Black Ice was recommended by our IT folsk. We're going to the PC-Cillin anti-virus software.
Matt Smith Aug 6th, 01, 1:31 PM Looks like it's time for the New Forum Moderator to get his butt in here WOOOHOOO http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I run ZoneAlarm 2.6 and Mcaffee on the 2 consoles here in the house, best setup I ever had here http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Cecil Aug 6th, 01, 1:48 PM Mind if I pick a nit? None of these tools can prevent bugs. They can, however, prevent virus infection, worms, and the like.
In my opinion, one of the best ways to prevent infection is to NEVER open an attachment in an email message, especially if it is from someone you do not know. Also, if you get a message with an attachment sent directly to you (no other address on the To: line), and it is from someone you do know, saying something like "Check out this home page" think about the sender and ask, Would he send this to just me, or to a lot of people? Many worms send themselves to everyone in your address book, but do it one at a time.

Uhhh Matt, Remember I'm walking a fine line with my reference to condoms in the post and you'll going to bring on the team jesters. Good luck if that horde arrives. LOL

Matt Smith Aug 6th, 01, 7:37 PM Oh, boy here we go http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Gene Chas Aug 7th, 01, 7:18 AM Rick Sutter, thnx for that link.
HOLY COW! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif
My machine is standing here naked "hanging out" with no condom on. Swinging in the breeze. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
Tom M, thnx for the Zone Alert deal. I downloaded the freebie.
Curious to see if it hangs with my quote service when the market opens in a few minutes. It has an "echo" to ensure real time .
Thank guys. Another reason the $30 Gold membership is a drop in the bucket.
Practice safe sex huh! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Great advice.

normie Aug 7th, 01, 10:51 AM There are a few solutions.. The best (IMHO) is a hardware solution (I personally use the linksys cable/DSL router) but you can also find many good software firewalls NAI makes cyber cop, Norton has norton personal firewall, www.tinysoftware.com (http://www.tinysoftware.com) has an ultra configureable firewall for you real techies.. You can find it.. I know zone alarm and black ice have holes in them, and do not catch some items, but can be patched. Most important things you can do to protect yourself. turn your PC OFF when not in use especially you broad band users.(you can't tell if something is running when your not there) Never open an EXE attachment, or any other unless you know the sender and it has been scanned, saved to your harddrive and scanned again. I delete any message that comes from someone I don't know or trust. Check your operating system's website for patches, bug/exploit fixes on a weekly basis. and for the ultimate in security, I redo all permissions on my windows NT or 2000 PC's so that noone but me can execute or make changes to anything in my system. Of course the easiest and least intrusive thing you can do to protect yourself is to make a weekly backup of your machine (I use Ghost) this way if something happens to my PC, 10 minutes later I am running like the day before.. Of course with doing that you will need too have a spare harddrive with plenty of space available.. But be warned, even the most secured systems have a hole in them somewhere, and the only ones that get patched are the ones that get out too the public. I've seen devices and people get data from PC's that were in a locked down and secured area.. if they want your data, they can get it... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
I passed the test with a freeware product called "Tiny Personal Firewall" I got it from www.winfiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com) I'm partial to Norton and with updated definition files have caught several virus' including one that was written directly into the e-mail (real scary)
