: Turlock swap meet thread
THORSS70 Dec 17th, 04, 2:13 AM OK guys, lets get started
Jan 29-30 Turlock fairgrounds, 2 days of hot rod heaven.
Jeff's Octoberfest beer, bratwerst, sausage (not that Ron :D ) red cabbage? and great friends.
Jay, let's get your ride on the road, and tearin' up the streets by the time we do this.
As you all know I am in a new home (to me) and the open spaces we enjoyed will be gone. But I still have plenty of room out on the street for parking, and a decent garage for the brewfest.
Come one, come all, for the best swap meet of the year graemlins/beers.gif
kinzli Dec 17th, 04, 11:38 AM I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it :( I just found out I have to go to RTP for that whole week before, and not sure if I'm going to be back Saturday or Sunday.
Regardless, I'm brewing the Oktoberfest brew this weekend, so it will be ready if I can make it.
Work sucks.
THORSS70 Dec 17th, 04, 12:07 PM We will come break your leg, and you then could go out on disability as a limp. This way, you could show, whatcha say? Ron will do it, for a few bucks or crack
Midnight Marauder Dec 17th, 04, 2:34 PM I'll be there and I will bring my sausage. :D

bigblockelky Dec 17th, 04, 9:15 PM a whole bunch of meat and no place to put it huh. ya my only goal for the whole year is to have the beast back in action and runnin 12's, im going with some keith black hypereutectics and pro moly rings so i can run the 100 shot ive always wanted, im not sure on the crank yet, ill get walts opinion. im definitly going mechanical on the cam, something nice and bumpy but still very streetable. probably have a little more headwork done too. so for the swap meet are we all going to get a space, or am i the only one with a bunch of random car parts to get rid of? Jeff i rreally hope you can make it man.. if you dotn want a broken leg we can also arrange arms, ribs... sausages?? up to you..lol
THORSS70 Dec 18th, 04, 12:33 PM Originally posted by Gokou [/qb]We're in for some real trouble if everyone brings sausage. [/QB][/QUOTE]
Well, then why don't we find this woman for Ron when he showes up then? Too much sausage is a bad thing sometimes.....

Gokou Dec 18th, 04, 10:06 PM I had no idea the government required 5mph bumpers for motorcycles...
bigblockelky Dec 19th, 04, 2:52 AM ouch.. 5mph.. thats a good one
kinzli Dec 19th, 04, 11:24 AM Thanks for the generous offer to break my limbs, I knew I could always count on my TC friends graemlins/hurray.gif
Have we decided to do this on Saturday or Sunday?
bigblockelky Dec 19th, 04, 9:28 PM well it wasnt a rod.. it was a valve that got in a fight with the #4 piston.. wow what a mess in there, the head needs work because its all mashed up and the exhast valve is bent and shoved into the side of it, theres no way thsi is a 20K mile motor liek it was supposed to be, the rod bearings are showing copper.. this things shot.. all super cheap parts too, like on of those kragen shortblocks.. im really surprised it ran as good as it did, if all goes right im building a 496!! can i get a muah ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa! i got a line on the crank and rods for the stroker kit, then ill just have to take my basket of "go really fast" goodies to manteca and let them have a ball. with that stroke it must be fun making that crank fit. im not sure if my head is fixeable not not, might be looking for a set of heads or having major work done to mine. no problem jeff.. the offer stands buddy!..lol. i vote for a saturday but if you can make it work by doing it sunday ill go with that.. for some reason saturdays are just cooler than sundays, sunday means monday is right around the corner.
Alan Dec 19th, 04, 9:37 PM I should be there. Either day will work (as of now anyway).
Jay, a 4.25" crank needed to make a 496 drops right in. I don't even think any clearancing is necessary (unless you're planning on aluminum rods).
To the next whiskey bar I go ;)
Rick Bandy Dec 20th, 04, 2:27 PM Well the 65 has the monkey bars installed and the five points with the race buckets! We should be there with both cars if the weather cooperates. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
bigblockelky Dec 20th, 04, 11:33 PM awsome, gotta see that car in person.
dittoz Dec 21st, 04, 11:25 AM Guys, I've been lurking and posting here and there but yet to meet anyone locally except for Phil (pnutkemist).
My 17-yr old son and I will be at Turlock when the gates open on Saturdaya nd would love to meet up with some of you later in the day...

THORSS70 Dec 23rd, 04, 2:45 AM Come on guys, let's get some post whoring here. I would like to see 30 posts before Christmas tongue.gif
Anybody have any predictions for the Chief's Raiders game Sunday???
Shane, what's up???
kinzli Dec 23rd, 04, 11:32 AM Whorin, whorin, whorin.
I'm coming back from NC on Saturday evening. Not sure if I'll make it Sunday, but will put that on the calendar. If you guys decide to chill on Sunday too I'll probably come over.
Dirty Al, I got your message last night bro, sorry, I didn't get it til about 10:30 and so I figured by that time you had worked through the problem. I usually use one of two different sanitizers - Iodophor or StarSan. Iodophor is a iodine-based sanitizer, and StarSan is an acid-based sanitizer. They'd both work, I prefer Iodophor personally. Bleach can be used, but you need to be careful of the concentration, and also not use it on aluminum or stainless steel. For those wondering, we're talking about beer brewing and sanitizing the hardware :D
Craig, have you decided on Saturday or Sunday for the Q?
Alan Dec 23rd, 04, 1:14 PM Kinzli, no problem. I think is was nearly in bed by that time. I did get the beer bottled tough ;) . I used bleach and mixed according to the Mr. Beer instructions. Hopefully my beer is drinkable! Thanks for the recommendations on the sanitizers. I'll pick up some Iodophor before I brew next. Any idea where I can get it locally? Where are the brew supply shops around here anyway?
kinzli Dec 23rd, 04, 1:44 PM Dirt, there's a great brew shop here in Scruz smile.gif
They're open 'til 6:30PM also, most days. They do mailorder, too. http://www.breworganic.com
Others are http://www.williamsbrewing.com (great!) and http://www.austinhomebrew.com (great also).
I think I'll brew this weekend finally. Things have been hectic here but I'm finally going to get around to it smile.gif You're welcome to join if you like, the duvel is starting to taste really good graemlins/beers.gif
Whorin it up. Back to Q talk.
dittoz Dec 23rd, 04, 2:29 PM I'll keep watching this thread and as it gets closer, we'll work out some details to meet up with y'all...
c
Alan Dec 23rd, 04, 2:53 PM Awesome Jeff, thanks for the links to those homebrewing companys. One of these Saturday, can we hit up that brew store in Santa Cruz? It looks like my Mr. Beer kit is too small-scale to get brewing ingredents at these homebrew places. Most of their beer ingredent kits are for 5.5 gals. Is that usually the case? If so, I might have to go BIG TIME soon graemlins/beers.gif .
Whoooorin', whoooorin'...
kinzli Dec 23rd, 04, 4:05 PM Dirt, yes, most small home brews are made in 5 gallon batches. That's what 90% of the kits are based on, and what most folks do. When you get really into it, a 10 gallon batch is cool, but pretty much everything is based around 5 gallons (the beer recipes, the kegs, the hardware kits, etc.).
I'd love to go with ya, I'm always looking for an excuse to go to the beer store. If you buy in person, they give you a better price, too smile.gif
It's really not hard to brew, just takes some time, some attention to details (cleaning/sanitizing) and the ability to sit and drink beer for a couple hours smile.gif Then again, you need to find a way to get rid of all of that beer, so we might have to have some extra TC BBQ's smile.gif I'm thinking of having one at my pad in the spring if anyone wants to come this way...
Alan Dec 23rd, 04, 5:31 PM Well, damn, nothing is cheap is it? I'll hone my skills a bit on this Mr. Beer kit, then step-up to something similar to what you have Jeff. I'll get that sanitizing solution, and acquire some equipment that doesn't come with the deluxe brewing kits. The biggest problem I have is keeping the room tempature in the recommended 65 degree to mid-70s range. My room is usually below 60 degrees in the winter - sometimes down to 55 degrees. I noticed some trick heaters for fridges, but they are pricy (and I'd have to buy a small fridge that could house a 6 gallon carboy.
I'll have to stay small-scale for now, as I'm running out of storage space where I live smile.gif
Well, maybe some Saturday in January we can raid the beer store and then go back to your place to drink beer :D or brew some up. I'm dying to try that Duvel. If I get going on this beer brewing too, the TC gatherings are going to be the best anywhere!!! It'll be the battle of the brewmiesters smile.gif .
kinzli Dec 23rd, 04, 6:41 PM Dirt, you can get started brewing for very little cashola. Really, the only thing you'd need to buy are the ingredients ($30 for extract ingredients for a 5 gallon batch), a few fermenting buckets (like $6 each), some tubing and miscellaneous gizmos (maybe another $10 or $15) and you're golden. Of course, you'd need to either bottle the beer or keg it, but there's a ton of ways to get through that. The "Corny" kegs that I use are about $15 each used, but you still need the CO2 tank, regulator and fittings, so that's where the extra $$ goes. You can get a full kegging setup though (CO2, regulator, guages, tubing, keg) for about $150. Buy a few more kegs at $15 each and you'd have a hangin setup.
Sorry TC guys, talking beer can get me going, didn't mean to hijack the thread, but it's all good whorin material.
Let's plan a beer brewin day Dirt. January (maybe 1st week or two) works for me.
Alan Dec 23rd, 04, 9:09 PM That's down right cheap compared to what the kits are on those websites smile.gif . You got a lot of nice stuff for your brewing! If I can upscale for as cheap as you say, I'm all for it. I guess the biggest expense would be the kegging. But then I'd have to get a 'fridge to put the keg and CO2 tank in. I'm sure we can figure something out!
Let's plan the beer brewin' day. Maybe get a few other guys (Troy and Craig come to mind) to cruise over. We could hit up the brew store (Craig I think is interested in brewing beer too) and we could see all the cool supplies. Then, head back to your place to watch you brew a new batch of brew and of course drink some of your choice on-tap beer(s). What do you think?
I probably won't have internet access until next week (I'm off until Jan. 3). If I don't see or talk to you guys, have a good Christmas and Happy New Year's!!! graemlins/beers.gif
kinzli Dec 24th, 04, 7:23 PM Sounds great to me, Dirt!
I'll be up for it just about anytime...whenever's convenient for you guys.
THORSS70 Dec 24th, 04, 10:14 PM Awesome post whoring going on :D
I am finally done with the paint job on the SSEi, damn it took long enough. The clear I used
i was not familiar with, but the car looks not bad. For a black car anyway.
Anyhoo, all of you have a wonderful Christmas day, and hope you all get what you wished for this year smile.gif
Let's keep this going....

Hope everyone had a great holiday, see all of you in 4 weeks with $$ in hand for some sweet parts hunting.
Keep this going, even though the meet killer Kinzli gave us the bad news we can still do the traditional post whoring :( ;)
kinzli Dec 29th, 04, 5:15 PM I apologize, it's beyond my control. My team at work has an offsite meeting once a year with mandatory attendance. This year it's in NC, usually it's in Europe but alas, yes, I'm a killjoy. I'm so sorry. If I can get back early you know I will, with beer in hand. I'm scheduled to return on Sunday, but that is not always set in stone.
Craig, did you guys decide on Saturday or Sunday?
THORSS70 Dec 30th, 04, 5:55 AM No need to apologize Jeff, don't feel bad at all. I was just giving you a hard tme to keep up tradition tongue.gif Work does come before play most times, a life fact.
Now, give Alan the beer and we will all be set :D
bigblockelky Dec 31st, 04, 5:23 PM we want beer we want beer we want beer! thats kinda hard to type, alot easier to chant, lol. well ill be at the swap meet but i doubt ill have any $ in hand for more parts, this things getting expensive! good news is theres nothing really expensive left to break, motor and tranny are the biggest $$ sinkers. happy new year to everyone, keep the whorin alive!

THORSS70 Jan 3rd, 05, 11:02 PM Whoa, don't let this go sliding down tongue.gif
So, anybody not showing??
I know Jeff has work to attend, but is anybody else not coming?
Ron???
Jeff M Jan 4th, 05, 9:15 AM We shootin for Saturday or Sunday? Plan on comming up the night before and stay at the daughter's place....not sure how to feel about not getting up and leaving at 4:00am.
Gokou Jan 4th, 05, 11:45 PM I'll be there...
Rick Bandy Jan 5th, 05, 1:57 AM Both Anthony and I should be there, hopefully with both cars. Craig, are you planning on Saturday or Sunday?
THORSS70 Jan 5th, 05, 4:51 AM Traditionally Saturday is the day to go because the Super Bowl was the next day. Not the case this year, so we are open for suggestion on what day?
Either one goes for me, but if one is taking the cars inside, Saturday you will be paying for both days, Sunday attendees are just paying for one. But there are some vendors that don't show up on Sunday so...
Let's take a vote?

Like the band Crazy Town sings in thier song "Revolving Door" - "Ladies come, ladies go, out my revolvin' door". smile.gif . Nah, it really sucks. But what can I do? Can't hold the woman back from achieving her life goals.
I'm still trying to figure out where I want to move smile.gif

I'm still trying to figure out where I want to move smile.gif Thats only because you do not have a basement with a well in it. Wherever you move, make sure to have a big hole dug in the floor of your basement adn line it with rock. Buy a poodle and stock up on lotion. Only downside here is that, inevitably you will find that Culture Club is your new favorite band. :D
I missed your call. Fell out drunk after I was out in the garage...yes...WORKING ON THE CAR!!!
I cant get the damn fenders loose. Two bolts, lower bottom side near the firewall. The little ef'ers just keep spinning in place. I dont know if its a clip or a nut on the backside but I cannot see it even with the inner fenders removed. Anybody got any tips for getting these out? I may be left with cutting off the bolt heads with my dremel and sliding the fender down and off to clear the stud that is left.
Just those two bolts on both sides. Down in the rocker / firewall area where the fender meets up with the door

Get yourself a hacksaw and cut the heads off. If you can access them from underneath, grap a pair of vice grips and clamp down hard. They are probably rusted shut, too late now to save them, sorry.

I only want to pull em because I need to do metal work to the backside corners to see if I can get those dings out. Plus I was thinking I could chemical strip the fenders since there are no big creases or gaps where I would be concerned about the chemical not neutralizing or being left behind and screwing with paint adhesion or bubbling up. Rest of the car will be taken down with a DA.
Getting that same compresor you have in your garage at tax return time. already got clearance from the "accountant"
I am FINALLY...FINALLY on my way.

Beaux, I'll keep the basement idea in mind ;) . It just might come in handy.
I may be calling you up tomorrow to help with your teardown. My GF left this morning, but due to the snow and chains being required on I-5 north of Redding, we decided it was best for her to turn around and come home. She'll have to fly up tomorrow instead. She's never driven in snow and doesn't know how to install/remove the tire chains. Conditions are too unsafe for her. I'd drive it though - I dig the challange smile.gif

Jeff M Jan 10th, 05, 12:34 AM Chris and I will be there at Wally World promptly at 6:30 am on Saturday morning. Got me a new used pickup and hopefully will be able to make it without stopping for gas. See ya there.
dittoz Jan 10th, 05, 10:35 AM So if we want to meet some of you guys, who/where do we look and is everyone going Saturday?
My son, his friend and I are going to be there when the gates open on Saturday morning with shopping list in hand. Need to leave Turlock by early afternoon to meet up with a friend for dinner in Sac who's coming in from out of town, but would love to hook up and say hi to the locals I keep reading about here!

Curt, if you want to meet us early, go ahead and drive down to the Wal mart location mentioned above. If you want to sleep in a bit, look for a bunch of ex-convicts that were hooked on crack. You should be able to spot us easy, just look for the group that is uncontrolably spazzing and yelling explotives :D Oops that's Ron's description, sorry tongue.gif
All joking aside......uh look for a red/black 70 Chevelle and a 66Chevelle with welds on it, we should be close. You do have to take off early, but we should be able to say hi and maybe bench race for a few at the house. Hope to see you there.

Looking forward to hanging out with all you old grimy beer-drinking dudes again..
Jeff M Jan 10th, 05, 11:19 PM Craig, I got a '01 GMC Sierra 1500 extend cab. It has the 5.3 and is pretty well loaded up. So we're anxious to go on this little trip, the truck drives and rides real nice. Maybe we'll buy something big and have room to haul it home. GIT ER DONE!!!!!!
Oh, Alan, the '64 is taking the back seat until Chris and Nikki get done with school......(didn't know they were going to be professional students...........)

That's a good reason graemlins/thumbsup.gif . Couldn't think of a better investment than putting money into your kids education graemlins/hurray.gif .
Gokou Jan 11th, 05, 2:19 AM Get ready for this one guys...
Remember last swap meet time and my discussion of my "curse" (after lunching the rear in the Chevelle and then a head gasket in my Vette the next day?)
Well, a friend of mine down the street has a nice 70 Chevelle, silver with black stripes. 355, 11.25:1 compression, big nasty cam etc. Well, he finally gets it up and running last week but his old Holley has a worn out baseplate. So he buys a new Proform and can't get it running right; my Dad and I come over on Sunday and get things sorted out.
Tonight we go and take it for the maiden voyage, but keep things sane (light throttle, no more than ~50, etc, mostly at my recommendation to sort things out.) About 3 miles into the drive I roll down a window and say "I hear a funny squeak from the right front, let's go back." About a mile later at 35 mph, we're going straight, everything is nice and smooth, and the next thing you know-- BANG! The right front DEPARTS THE VEHICLE! Scrape, grind, and spark to a stop in an asphalt service driveway (the only good luck we had, stopping on solid ground.)
Smashed one header tube, ground a flat on the rotor, demolished the backing plate, put some creases around the lip of his nice new and freshly painted front fender, etc. 4 studs completely sheared off at the rotor, one stud with the threads left but bent over (that's the first tip off for the cause of the problem for those of you trying to figure out what happened.)
Anyways, the fix was pretty easy. Call a friend to come get us, go back to my house, grab a spare tire/wheel, new studs/lugnuts, a jack, and some tools. Get back (of course it starts raining at this point, and the hood is off), jack it up, yank the caliper and rotor, knock out the broken studs, put in new ones, reassemble, throw the spare on, and drive home at 5 mph.
Got it back, jacked it up, and found the problem. He's running Weld drag wheels with shank style lug nuts... and the lugnuts in front were too short. The drivers side wheel grabs about 3 turns of thread before they bottom out on the wheel. That's why 1 stud on the passenger side was mostly intact-- that lug must have backed off and fallen out, and then the others worked loose and sheared the rest.
Anyways, a bit scary, he's not too happy, but it'll be a fairly easy fix since he still has some paint. I just hate to think what would have happened if it let go at 50 mph in a turn, pointed towards the walnut orchard, which is what it was doing about 1/2 mile earlier...
Hopefully it gets fixed by the end of the month, he'll bring it down there. If not I might drag him down there in my car.
Everyone call him Tricycle, OK? ;)
Troy
THORSS70 Jan 12th, 05, 2:35 AM I would be pissed off if that happened to me  More at myself than anything else, glad to see he was going very fast at all. Plus it would be nice to see another 70 down here, there seems to be a shortage of them lately tongue.gif
Now, did you touch said vehicle? If you did, please let me do any wok alone on my car please ;) And I will be the first to warn the others of the 'Troy curse'
Jeff, nice truck, it will make driving up and down much easier this time. Nice to see you in a new vehicle, maybe keep this as long as you have had the 71?
Jeff M Jan 12th, 05, 8:55 AM Oh yeah, I plan on keeping it 34 years or more! I'll trade it in on a rascle scooter! Sure hope I can find some bling at the swap meet.

Aye, I got's yer 70 right here, pal! graemlins/angry.gif

I am gonna form the front and rear bumpers into a cross and remove the inner spokes on my steering wheel. I will carry the cross made from bumpers everywhere like I was the Chevelle Jesus. Steering wheel will be my thorn crown.
Al was cool enough to come out last weekend and twirl some wrenches (and a hack saw) we got the front end torn down to the frame and the dash all ripped out.
Frame is really tweaked on this car and I have a fairly large rust hole in the lower cowl drain area by the door that will require some patch work. Had I not decided to tear this sucker down and just repaint I would have never seen it. Its not good. Fixable (not by me, I dont have the metal working / welding skills) but fixable none the less.
Sign Me "SS Jesus" I prefer Hay-SUSE pronunciation.

Alan Jan 13th, 05, 7:45 PM So basically, the moral of Troy's story is to NOT let him work on your car. And do NOT buy any parts from him or take free parts either. Use best judgement when he asks for a spin around the block in your ride. If his car makes it to the function, you may be in the clear. If his car is possessed that day, tell him NO ride!
:D . Troy you need to go see one of those ladies that look into a crystal ball. Do something to get rid of the curse ;)

The day is Saturday guys, the 29th.
Rick Bandy Jan 15th, 05, 7:49 PM It is a real bear getting in or out of that thing but like I have been telling him its a darn race car now. He just picked up a Richmond ring and pinion 410 gears for 80.00 it was used but only had four passes on it. The guy said it was too low for his 70 468 Chevelle.

Tony, your bud with the red 66 called me tonight. I was leaving for work, I will return his call Friday evening. If he asks anyway. He wanted to talk to me about the event, and the BBQ afterwards. Looks like we have one more on the list....
Well, it's 9 days away, lets get a roll call to see who is showing up, and how many will be attending the BBQ. With Kinzli being out of town that weekend, we need to decide what we want to do with the beer supply. We could rent a kegger, or we could just wing it and BYOB.
All suggestions are encouraged.
Rick Bandy Jan 20th, 05, 10:02 AM Both Anthony and I have Saturday and Sunday off and we should be there with both cars, his may not be recarpeted or the bars painted but its a darn race car now.....right? graemlins/sad.gif
1966_L78 Jan 20th, 05, 7:10 PM Craig,
Thats Ray (he was at the BBQ talking to Troy about 65-66 Vette roadsters)... He was interested in the swap and get together, so I gave him your number (I hope that was okay)...
I was looking forward to this, but alas, I will be unavailable until Sunday...
its a real bear getting in or out of that thing I'd love to go just to see Craig try to slide in there...
ANYTHING going on the next two weeks AFTER the swap (Jan 30th-Feb 13th)? I will be home and the wife out of town with the kids (Woo Hoo!)...
Maybe I'll bring home a new Chevelle project then...

Hang tight. I am emailing Reta to find out. :D
Heck ya, i'd love to tag along and check out that 70 with you guys. Pulling mine apart has given me more insight on where to look. Of course, cowl drain area is a big one. Rear wheel housing and all the other stuff Craig mentioned in his email reply. He covered it all which is why I did not add anything. If anyone knows these cars and the body / rust issues, I think its the big man. If the battery / rad drain area was mucked up then most likely it would just be the tray and the inner fender that took the hit. Happened to mine. Rad support as well but mines clean enough to powder coat after stripping. No real fatigue or anything there.
I would be up for taking a ride and checking it out. Never hurts to have extra eyes, even if they are minimally experiences eyes. I may not know it all but I have OCD so even the SMALLEST of issues on any car, heck any THING pop out at me.
THORSS70 Jan 22nd, 05, 12:49 PM I would be willing to go look at this ride, no problemo. We need to just drop by Tony's place for that 66 on the way home, I'll tow it home behind my Chevelle
We will take Beaux's tahoe, pimp style
Rick Bandy Jan 22nd, 05, 9:45 PM Craig how hard is it to get your car in to park inside? I know that it is next to impossible to get a sales site at this meet. And I will not leave either car outside to possibly get damaged or stolen.
THORSS70 Jan 22nd, 05, 11:30 PM Rick, I would be sick if your cars got in any way damaged. Tell you what, I was able to buy for sale passes Friday afernoon for the weekend last year, I will buy 3 of them (if they let me) for you and Anthony and all you have to do is re-emburse me when you arrive. IF I can do it, let me know and I will.
If I am wrong, they may charge you for both days, $40 last year. May have changed, or I can expliain that we are only one day and they give me a break. If so, it will be at least 25. If you don't want to pay that much, please let me know and you can park at my place and we can drive my car in and you will be able to get in at min cost.

Al, your his groupie, wasssup?
Gokou Jan 23rd, 05, 1:40 AM I hope the weather is good for next weekend...
I'm guessing I probably can't make the swap meet, as based on current schedule stuff I'm probably going to have to be at work Saturday morning programming some test equipment and making sure it starts up OK before I can leave it alone. We'll see. I really want to make the swap meet this time!
I need to hurry up, my car is in the garage with the power steering pump out (designing a new bracket to get rid of the idler pulley) and also the rear end is out, yet again-- one of my 1 month old new rear upper bushings didn't fit too tight in the rear end and today it decided to walk part way out of the ear on top the rear end. Heard a pop when turning right from a stop sign and felt something funny, drove home easy and found that. Ugh. Need to get another new bushing and press it in, hopefully it fits tighter this time.
Once again-- care if I touch anybody's car? ;)
Rick Bandy Jan 23rd, 05, 2:18 PM Craig,
If you can get them go ahead and I will pay you. What is the long range forecast?

However, before I spend any more money on mechanical stuff the car doesn't *NEED* (does it really need turbos? Not really, the car is already fast enough, but they'd be super-trick), I'm going to get the paint and bodywork out of the way. I'm becoming highly motivated for body/paint since I finally picked out a paint color/stripe scheme/matching wheel combo. The other motive is stopping the rust under the vinyl top before a fairly simple patch job turns into putting an entire new roof on the car.
Just need to start stripping the car, yank the body and send it to the body guy, and keep the frame so I can have my way with it-- i.e. box the center section, fully weld all seams, and build a custom 3-link out back. Maybe a custom front clip with C5 or even C6 suspension for good measure...
It never ends! tongue.gif
Weather being good I'll have it down there Saturday. Got the new rear bushing today so I need to press that back in and slap the rear end back in the car. I should have the tuning done by then so I can provide some "fun" rides. ;)

Anthony/Rick, it looks like the car for sale passes are available for buying Friday afternoon (3-8PM), so if I get my arse over there I will gladly pick up 3 unless they don't let me? I will try guys, but they might get stingy if one car is buying 3 passes. If I am able to, I'll buy 3. If not, you may want to get over there early and get in line. Or, if you want to, drive the cars to my place and leave them there and go in with me in the 70. Either way, you won't have to leave your cars out in public. Let me know what sounds good to you guys.
THORSS70 Jan 26th, 05, 1:35 AM Oh, BTW, Reta's birthday is this Friday as well as mine next week. Please make sure everyone points that out to her, it will make her day :D
Also, please refrain from the shock of my new garage, it is quite different than the old one. Other than no drywall on the walls and smaller space, yes, the wall on the house side is....pink. Hey, at least I got the mountains of useless cabinets and shelves out of there, took almost a 15 yard dumpster  Not done yet either, also need to rid my yard of all of the foliage the last owner enjoyed. You'll see graemlins/sad.gif
Rick Bandy Jan 26th, 05, 10:24 PM Craig,

Don't tell us you painted your car PINK Craig? tongue.gif
THORSS70 Jan 27th, 05, 1:41 AM No spanking here, might get me slapped. Not the first time though, but worth the risk maybe.
What I was thinking of doing, is just driving in from the house, and forgetting the wal-mart meet. Nobody new will be really showing up at that time, all of the regular guys know what to do anyhoo. It might be a good idea, this swap is quite crowded, every chance to get in on time would be smart. So, what's everyone think? I will be in there by 7AM, or in line at least. We could all just meet at the cars, wherever we find a parking spot. I do want to park next to Rick and Anthony, so keep an eye out for the red lineup. Heck, maybe Rick can fire up his awsome sound system and blare Ice-t or Public Enemy for an easy landmark, just listen for the white homies breakin' it down....vanilla ice style, but we aren't cruising 5.0's with the top down. Oh boy, that would be good. I do need a new blue bandana, dang, where can I get one locally...oh Wal-Mart of course ;)

Alan Jan 27th, 05, 1:35 PM "all I wanted was Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me. I live in an institution, was the solution...". Yep, that's the song Craig. "I went to your schools, your churches, your institutional learning facilities. How can you say I'm crazy? I'm crazy? You're crazy!" HAHA smile.gif . I saw Suicial in Chico, back when I was in college. That show ROCKED!

One of my co-workers who just bought a 69 Camaro will be showing as well. He bought it out of state from a dealer on E-bay. It's blue with white stripes.
Anyhoo, also I will make my way over to Costco today and pick up tri-tip and some sausage. You guys can get the beans/potato salad when we go to the store later. I'll let you know how I did.
dittoz Jan 28th, 05, 6:37 PM Hey you guys with Turlock experience...
Is it worthwhile to get there at 7am, or 6am, or...? Looking for some specific parts, but also just some "good deals".
In other words, is there a MASS at the gates waiting for 7am, or is getting there a few minutes before okay?
Coming from Sacto - 90 min drive - 5am leaving - OUCH!
THORSS70 Jan 28th, 05, 11:46 PM Curt, there is quite a croud at the gates tomorrow morning. Lots of people anticipate this, and jack prices up. But the 'good' deals are there as well, so to answer your question, it's a gamble. I know I am vague but you never know what you will find.
We will be at the Main st exit at the AM/PM off the freeway around 6:30 or so, if you want to meet us there, feel free to.
I did get to Costco and picked up 4 tri tip steaks and a large pack of bratwerst so we should be set.
See you all in the morning whenever you all arrive

1967talldeck427 Jan 29th, 05, 10:49 PM Did you guys check out that blown purple 67 with a 66 front clip? Beautiful car. Wonder if He sold it. Was asking 27K.
sinned Jan 29th, 05, 11:07 PM Left Craigs at 5:45, fought through traffic to freeway and headed up onramp at 5:54, got stuck behind TWO highway patrol cars for about 7-10 miles, rolled through Tracy at 6:13 and walked in the front door at 6:34. Tell your buddy my estimate was off, with the traffic and coppers my Turlock to Tracy time was a few minutes more than the 20 minute estimate.
It was a kick guys, nice to finally put some faces with the names.....well maybe it was, I'm not sure yet.
Hey Craig, tell the neighbors sorry about striping the street, I tried to keep it short and quiet.
Jeff M Jan 30th, 05, 12:49 AM Hey guys we made it home too. Well I did, dropped Chris off in Visalia to see his g/f. Kinna missed not taking one of the 35 year old vehicles but the trip was quite a bit quicker and a bunch less gas. Thanks again Craig and Rita for your hospitality. Happy birthday to you two. Nice turn out. Where you gonna move to now after the neighbors come to string you up?? Jeff
Gokou Jan 30th, 05, 1:41 AM Thanks again Craig and Reta for hosting another fun event.
Good seeing everyone again and meeting the new people, too!
My curse is STILL working-- I lost my alternator on the way home just outside of Manteca. My first sign should have been when I had to up the gauge light brightness a couple times on the freeway in Turlock, and then just before Manteca the Generator light came on. Made it the rest of the 20 miles home on the battery. I'm going to kiss that brand new Optima deep cycle, it saved me a tow!
Weird failure, it looks like the stator and main shaft just started walking backwards. The internal fan was scraping against the back of the case and as a result of the shift it ate the brushes. The front fan is about .020 away from rubbing on the case. I'm damn lucky it didn't seize and toss the belt, then I would have been stuck! It's a brand new Powermaster CS130 140 amp, barely 1000 miles on it. Hope their warranty treatment is good!
I think I need a volt gauge.

I rolled in about 7pm and I also had a CHP escort for about five miles, until that 5.0 passed us both and then he got the escort! Craig is probably sound a sleep as he looked kind of tuckered out after blowing out all those candles. tongue.gif
sobever066 Jan 30th, 05, 10:37 PM I went today sunday. I froze my butt off. It's cold in the valley

Things wen't well last night, even though I was in a smaller place we had a very good turnout despite the lack of room. A few new faces (Denny, Raymond etc) I think we have some new permenent members. Denny, very nice meeting you and picking your brain on suspension tech. I did make a love connection, Troy/Denny. Must say, they make a cute engineering couple tongue.gif We do also have a meting of the minds on the new patented ideas for the 'bling' people of the USA. We'll talk later...
Troy, nice to run into you this morning at the swap meet, I did end up stopping by the Dyer tent and picking up a headliner kit for the '70. I also ran into an owner of an original 1969 Camaro convertable pace car for sale for 40K! Sweet ride, he was currently building an LS6 Chevelle.
Anyhoo, don't worry too much about some newly laid rubber on my street, nobody shot at me when I fired up the Chevelle this morning at 9AM to go to the swap....it's all good.
Yo, I've got the 27 inch video screen on the roof of the truck with flip out PS2 dual games and 4 10" woofers, i'll be flippin holmes when I be bangin the smack down.
:D

The only 65/66 Chevelles there were red and parked over by a red 70SS and a blue 69 Camaro. Is this the same cars?
Did you say anything to us if these were the cars? We would have invited you back for some BBQ.

Troy No comment here, I think I speak for the group here: never touch or ride in anything any of us own ever again.
True story :D
PS, I hope powermaster gives better customer service than BOT. If not, you will be buying another alternator....
1966_L78 Jan 31st, 05, 2:17 AM Well, now I'm even more bummed, sounded fun... Wish I coulda made the trip. Instead I got to drive to LA Saturday with the kids... Flew back tonight (wife/kids staying south for a few weeks)...
Troy, I'd gladly let you "touch" my Chevelle, but only if I could pick what breaks...
Gokou Jan 31st, 05, 3:38 AM Craig, after the swap meet today I ran up to Reno and exchanged my alternator over the counter at Summit. Bought it in October. Brought it to the counter and said I'd like to return it. The guy spun it, felt/heard the awful scraping and said "that's not right, we'll get a new one for you" and 5 minutes later I had a new one from the back in my hand. No questions asked! I love that place.
It was a total spur of the moment type road trip, but it was cool. We were having lunch in Modesto after the swap meet and I sort of thought out loud "I wonder if Summit has my alternator in stock." We all kind of looked at each other and it was on. Got back home, 4 of us piled in my friend's new '05 Crewcab Duramax (with a recently installed Kenwood DVD player, 3 10" subs, and 1500 watts we did last weekend) and we watched movies all the way there and back. Us backseat passengers didn't like watching the dash, so next weekend we're putting 7" screens in the headrests. LOL. Guess I should be a builder on Pimp My Ride, TV's everywhere! We left Stockton at 4pm and we were walking around in Summit at 6:15pm. Just got back at 11pm including a stop for dinner. I love that truck! 75-90 all the way there and we still got 16.5 mpg on the way UP THE HILL! We bought a 150 horse Bullydog kit for it at Summit, too. We were going to install it in the parking lot but it was 29 degrees and we couldn't see the electrical connectors we had to get to. That sucker is gonna RIP with 150 more HP. :D

hxturbo Jan 31st, 05, 12:15 PM Craig....red/orange...maybe I'm getting color blind in my old age. The ones I saw had twin personalized plates and I think one was tubbed. As for me not saying anything, I usually just admire the cars and don't ask a lot of questions. A character flaw maybe, but I'm pretty quiet about these things and don't bother the owners. I probably need to get over this as I'm sure people love to hear how nice their rides look (and these did look especially nice.
I would have enjoyed the bar-be-que though as there were no corn dogs at this event!!!!

dittoz Jan 31st, 05, 2:58 PM So, anyone find any killer deals?
I started talking to a guy about a 71 chevelle fender he was passing off as a '70 when he told me he had a 70 tail-light lens too. Went and looked and turned out he had a box with a complete set of lenses for a 70. They all had 30 years of road grime, but were otherwise perfect. Looked at the rest casually and then picked up one with as bad a face as I could muster and asked what he wanted for it...
He says well, I'll sell you the whole box for...
oh... how about $15?
Two rows over, a guy I'd just talked to was selling a single used tail-light lens for $45...
Needless to say, I took his offer, went home, cleaned it all up and found that all the lenses are practically new.
Not a bad deal, considering a set has got to be well over $100, but it was the only real deal I found. Was tempted on the old guy selling the fresh rebuilt W/ receipts) TH400, but $600 was a little spendy for my budget even though it was a pretty nice one.
LOVED that blown purple one and the red 70 'bu was nice too. Then again, they were ALL nice! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
SS66rag Jan 31st, 05, 3:37 PM It was good hooking up you you guys on saturday...thanks for letting me hang out for a while even though i didn't bring the chevelle. i felt wierd about that since i am an advocate of "DRIVE IT OR SELL IT!" I got a couple of solid leads for my dad on his car though...and discovered that @5200 rpm it is travelling @
120 mph (it red lines @7000) and i didn't even have to turn up the radio!! just did't have the thrill of a bbc 4-spd convert though! I did't find a thing on saturday but as we were leaving sunday i got a 64-67 console shift handle w/reverse lockout-T for $20.00 SCORE! and a shop manual for my old 77 capri (302 V-8)for $3.00 SCORE!

Alan Jan 31st, 05, 4:48 PM What can I say? Another great swap/BBQ. Thanks to Craig and Reta for hosting in their new digs. Cool house and nice neighborhood (at least 'till we showed up!). It was good meeting the new guys and I'd like to thank Denny and Troy for making me feel dumb ;) . I tried a few times to listen in on the conversations, but I went into "dumb mode" within a few minutes! If I need suspension advice I know who to call though. That's a BAD ARSE El Camino there Denny. Oh and Troy, thanks for the ride in your over-the-top '69. Loved it. Sorry to hear about the alternator, but glad Summit did you right.
I got a Fisher Body manual for my '71 and a driver's outside mirror for $20. I had to do a little modification, but got the mirror mounted in the original mirror holes on the door.
So Chris has a b/f in Visalia? Must be a sweet little boy tongue.gif . Chris did you give him a tow home? It was good B.Sin' with you Chris and Jeff.

Steve Yep that was us you should have kicked back and stayed a while. There was really alot of bench racing going along, and even a bit of trash talkin. It was a good time. Me and my son own the 65- 1BAD6T5 and the 66- 1BAD6T6. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
sinned Feb 1st, 05, 1:48 AM You guys are giving me a comlex, then I walk outside and remind myself what a peice of junk I really have.
Next time you guys come to my side of the tracks....Pleasanton is having a show in March I beleive.
hxturbo Feb 1st, 05, 2:44 AM Rick,
Those are beautiful cars. I usually like the 70-72 Chevelles but your rides certainly make me think twice. If I see them again I will stop and say hi. I can only hope that people see my 72 and ooh and aw like I was doing over yours.

Midnight Marauder Feb 1st, 05, 1:23 PM I hate all you guys and the show sucked. The company was horrible, the beer was cheap and yer cars are too friggin loud. And then, on top of all this, you all have the nerver to drive like a-holes in that little neighborhood. Bunch of bastids.
:D graemlins/beers.gif
Had a blast, as usual. Good times.
I hear ya, Alan. I tried to keep up with Troy and Denny and that lasted, eh, 'bout 15 minutes. I have a goal - to read and learn and not really to benefit the car, but just so I can talk to these two dead sexy guys and hold my own. Maybe they'll take me out for drinks after or sumpin' if they respect my mind and not just my body. :D

I left you a voicemail on your cell about the wheels for your truck. Let me know if you still want them and I can grab them for you.
C.W.Mellow Feb 1st, 05, 11:27 PM Pops and I took off just in time it sounds like. We felt a little out of place with the Dennis/Troy love connection and Craig following Beaux around like a lost puppy. Alan had a few too many beers and with Ron not being there, he kept looking back over his shoulder and winking at me.
Good times, good times. As always had a great time. Nice place Craig and Reta, thanks for having us big bunch of misfits again. Nice seeing everyone again and meeting the new folks. Hope to see ya'll again next time.

If I was following Beaux around that afternoon just because my dog was taking a liking to him and did not need to see any 'mississippi leg hound' happening. Must have been the scent of 'ol Ron on something he was wearing. ;)
And who could take props away from the Troy/Denny 'connection', it was damn romantic I must say smile.gif I am pissed though, their collective efforts will all make our cars look like Yugo's trying to keep up with Z-06's at Laguna Seca. It ain't gunna be pretty.
Thanks on the house, I do have tons of work cut out for me. Next time I hope to have the garage finished, Shane bud, I'll buy.....
