: Went to my LAST Super Chevy Show

At the Texas Motorplex, anyway. First of all, it rained all day Saturday which is no fault of the staff or track. Half of the vendors showed up. The food & drink was one single booth for hamburgers, one corn on the cob and one lemonaide stand. ( I knew none of this until I later went inside)
The show section was 1/4 to 1/3 of what is usually is, maybe 40 cars. The swap meet was non-existant and the car corral had 4 cars. The stands for racing was loaded with about 40 people.
Plenty of racers though.
I showed up in my 66 convertible late in the day due to problems at home, I left late. When I got there, the show judging was finishing. They wouldn't let me on the gounds for anything less than full show admission. $75 for me & passengers.
There was Sooooo much space on the tarmac it was rediculous. I offered $40 to just park on the asphalt. NO WAY! They even yelled at me and I was nothing but pleasant and smiling.
Well, we had driven over a 100 miles to here so we looked for a place to park. The ONLY place they would let me park was a mud-drenched field. There were cars/trucks stuck everywhere. Standing water and thick gooey mud. Even the parking attendants thought it was rediculous how it was all set up. It was 3 in the afternooon and there must have been room for 3,000 parking spaces on the pavement, yet they wouldn't let anyone park there. I took a big chance and parked my 66 along the roadway. We had to at least use a porta-potty, eat a $5.00 crappy hamburger and see something shiny. It was $22 a person to get in. Once inside and experiencing the dissapointment, I knew then and there that they were soaking everybody for their last nickel to make up for thier appearant losses. So in the end, I spent $57.50 plus 21.50 for gas. That totals $79 to view all of this, the smallest little Chevy Show in Texas. I've been to better cruise nights for nothing. Plus I had to clean MUD off of my car when I got home. Sad sad sad.

Wow...Super Chevy at the Motorplex used to be a great event. I hope it was just the weather that turned people away and soured the staff's mood. I sure hope it isn't a case of 'give us your money and don't expect much in return', a trend that seems to be growing in popularity just about everywhere. :(

I too left. We got there Friday night and found out Sat morn that Saturday was cancelled, but Sunday would be a go. I knew the parking would be a swamp, and with drizzle expected for Sunday, we went home. ...been stuck in that mud before.
I understand the cars are no longer "judged", but instead, a fraction of the previous # of judges just "pick" cars. I also hear that the overall number of awards is about 1/3 of last years. They have even lowered the standards for Gold Class cars so that undercarriage is no longer looked at. How sad is that! graemlins/sad.gif

We're lucky here. SCS Indy is one of the largest if not THE largest. We have probably over 100 Chevelles just by themselves. The swap meet takes hours to walk and the car corral has probably near 100 cars. And we pay the same prices as the small shows, which isn't fair to those people.

Von, I'm very interetsed in what a single day's admission price is in Indy.

Excuse my ignorance here, but what is a "car corral" at these shows?

John,

The "car corral" is an area set aside for those people who are trying to sell their vehicle. The organizers pick a particular area and corral all the for sale cars together.

Jimmy, Per the ad in Super Chevy magazine, for Sat or Sun adult (over 12) spectator is $22, same as everywhere else (raised $2 from last year). Friday is the only difference in location price; $7 except Indy, Pomona, Norwalk, and Maple Grove, where it's $10.

If you ask me, SCS has reached it's zenith and should be out in flames in no time. Talk about greedy!

I remember when every "best" car, (camaro, chevelle, elcamino etc) would get their car's picture in the magazine. That's gone, along with the "listing" of winners names/car. Then the group pictures of the winners themselves got so small you needed a magnifying glass to see them! Sometimes things should just be left alone. Without the owners and their cars, the show would cease to exist. SURELY

Funny, I was just looking through my photo albums yesterday, came across a pic from SCS Seattle '90 with myself and Doug Marion, and the Doug in the back of the truck next to me in the swap meet area, hittin' on the 2 gals sellin' Camaro parts. Good times. He even mentioned me and my El Camino in the write-up. graemlins/thumbsup.gif It'd be a shame to see it all go, due to cutbacks and greed.

I feel your pain with the lack of vendors and services. For the past 3 years over here in Hawaii, they've been putting on a "tough truck" competition. First year, they started so early, hardly anyone was in the gates yet. Missed a bunch of the rock crawl competition. The mud was good, tough for most trucks. First one through was about the 10th one trying, and it was a Chevy. ;) The second year, they decided to not let you bring in any food or beverages. Then, they ran out of food, and were selling warm sodas, due to lack of ice. graemlins/clonk.gif They also wouldn't let you go out to your car for a drink. Last year was the worst, we sat there for 3 hours watching them build the rock pit. Then they placed the articulation ramp about 50 yards away from the stands, and faced it the wrong way, so you couldn't see the underside of the trucks. Only good part to this was getting a full view of the idgit who rolled his CJ on the ramp. :D They also had warm drinks again, and ran out of food. graemlins/clonk.gif It's a shame the promoter doesn't care. Only reason I'm going this year is because my friend is entering his truck in the mud bogs. I wouldn't do it if I were going to have to get another sunburn for nothing. At least the competitors can sneak in food and drinks. You'd think if they're going to ban outside stuff they could at least provide cold drinks and hot food for their outrageous prices.

Maybe someone should forward a link to this discussion to someone at Super Chevy. I doubt the magazine guys would care, but the promoter for the shows might want to start. I'm sure this isn't the only discussion about it on the web right now.

I sent an email to SC last year when the show coverage in the magazine became so insulting. They never responded. The Dallas show was such a class act years ago...sad situation.

I feel the pain, I went to Dallas also despite the forcast on Saturday. Took 3.5 hours to get there. Show cancelled and rescheduled for Sunday. Ended up staying with a friend, and me and the wife set out Sunday to go. Called from Dallas at approx. 8:30 and they said no rain there but was in Dallas. Got there and was pouring down rain. We turned around and came home. Also Attended the last 2 years at SCS in houston. We were disappointed in the one last year. the 02 show was much more fun.

sorry to hear about your Bad SCS weekend..
I attend the Maple Grove event ever year...
and for the most part pleased with the show..
There has been an Flux in the comercial vender sponser.. but if the weathers is good.. there 600 plus racers.. a good flea market ( you just have to put up with the Gready Pros who hound you in the entrance line ) and many many cars to look over all weekend long...
as for the Judging... There has been some ruffled feathers by the 1000 point types.. who's Queens get by passed by, for a car with more eye Candy apeal.
I guss that's why they have the AACA tongue.gif

From a dependable source (which I shall not name), there is a good probability that after this year, there may not be any SCS shows west of the Miss! We'll see.

The SCS at Atlanta has always been an ok, not great event, but the price is ridculous. With all the press and other sponsorship that event should have, there is no way it should cost that much. That event shouldnt be more than a good movie, which still isnt cheap. They have removed the "family" from the event cause you can't afford to take them!!!! I have literally had that conversation with my family, I wanted to go, others somewhat wanted to go, but we decided not to cause their somewhat didn't justify the outrageous price.

I also think that event was once a great place to locate parts, but with the internet now making the connection, who needs it. You could at one time search that whole event to find a part, you would pay an ok price, but you had to drive there, and pay admission. Now you can find what you want on the internet and have it shipped to the door.

I think this event is dieing a slow death...... It really reminds me of the Atlanta Falcons. They really have sucked for quite a while, their ticket prices were almost 50-100 per game, and suprise, no one went to the game!!! A new owner came in, dropped the price, now you can buy a SEASON TICKET for the old regular single game ticket price. Then SUPRISE again, people start coming to the games again.

SCS better figure it out and price the event at a level where the masses are willing to pay, or go ahead and throw in the towel. The great thing about capitalism is that you can decide if what you are paying is well proportioned to the value you get. This year I will not pay the money they would like to attend this event.

My last Super Chevy Show was several years ago at Ennis (Dallas area). I knew I was going to have a bad day when I witnessed a gate attendant reach into a baby stroller, remove a baby bottle and pour the contents out. The attendant told the baby's mother that she could purchase drinks inside.

Now I'm not sure that Super Chevy is to blame for the way the place is run but it sure set a bad tone with me.

Unfortunately, I think the SCS series is making it's final curtain call. Turn-outs have been less than stellar (Pomona this year was terrible), and prices keep rising. A few vendors said they were not coming back next year, and with that said, I think it'll go on for a couple more years and die.

Unless someone pumps some new ideas, energy and makes it what it used to be, it will be gone.

I'd guess that they had roughly 1/2 of the cars that they had last year attend this year. Attendance was down I'd guess by 3/4 of what it was last year. The stands were pretty empty. Even my friends who raced said they got in over twice as many runs on Friday as compared to last year.

Keep in mind that they cancelled the AZ and NV SCS this year, and Pomona was expected to be the largest one yet, and it turned out to be a bust.
