: Burnout Question

I'm hoping that there's a logical explanation of why my Chevelle lays down only one patch of rubber when I peel out. My rear right tire is the one that does all the burning, however, my car does rock to it's right side when I rev the engine. Is that why you think ? Sorry if this is a question you've all heard before.

You've got what is called an "open" rear end. To do a two-tire burnout, you need a "posi" or "posi-traction" rear end. This kind of rear end upon burnout will deliver power to both wheels and even out traction. When you are turning though, it will let one break loose and go faster. For power applications, posi is the way to go. For a more in-depth explanation look in the performance board for a post called "What is posi-traction exactly?"

It may not be an SS, but it will eat your Honda.

'69,

I'll suggest that your '69 lacks a positraction rear end or, if it DOES have one, it is not in good repair.

Or;

It ain't got no stinkin posi or it be broke.

(EDIT)
454 got there before I did (and was a heck of a LOT more informative than I was!)

Also, the "rocking" you feel is the engine torque trying to - well, pull the chassis over to that side when you rev the engine.

line up once, burn out.

Line up a second time, but this time, put your right tire where your left tire was, and burn out again. I think thats how its done http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Or u can get a Posi http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I'll sell you my gears w/posi for $200,000.00 firm. Let me know http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Ah the dreaded one wheel burnout....

The trick is to wear down the right rear until its slick, then swap the two back tires and roast the tread off of the other one, that way the're even http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

That reminds me of high school...
I had a nice 66 malibu, but someone had put a 307 in it. With the powerglide and the stock rear, I couldn't even spin the tire by power-braking it. It would just lift up and start to stall against the motor. Only way to spin was water or a hard right turn, but once it got started, it would spin for days... Actually wore all four tires out (rotated them) in three weeks. Boy was mom pissed, but she couldn't figure out how I did it, because even she tried some burnouts to no avail...

here's a neat little trick to impress your friends - if you don't mind the mess - pour some motor oil in front of the tires and roll up on it and lay into it. Not only will it get both tires going, it will make some pretty blue smoke!!

What's worse than trying to get all of the molten rubber off the quarters? ... Trying to get molten rubber and oil off the quarters! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

But it does give some nice blue smoke http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
