Chev,

Go to www.5speeds.com (http://www.5speeds.com) and then click on the Muncie 4-speeds link on the left. Paul has all sorts of info, like case main case/rear/side cover casting numbers, etc-etc. Also Check out www.muncie4speed.com. (http://www.muncie4speed.com.)

DZAUTO (Tom) and Wally (Wally) are our resident Muncie guru's........

He should let you pull the cover off to inspect it. When you get the cover off, look in the bottom of the tranny for any chips or metal dust or the like. Look at the syncros and see if they are rounded off. If it was recently redone, they should have a wedge like point on each tooth. No chipped teeth.
Look at the condition of the oil. If it was recently rebuilt, the oil should look new.
Rotate the input shaft and see if you can feel any grinding, lumpyness, or grabbing. If you do, it is probably a main bearing. It is difficult to know if it will shift ok while it is out of the car. You can usually get a feel by shifting the levers on the side. If this doesn't feel quite right, it will be much better with a shifter attached to it.
If all of this looks ok, you probably can't go wrong at that price.
I am not a Muncie guru, but it seems you wanted some fast input. I would suggest you get another opinion.

chev-hell, You live close enough to DZ AUTO that the two of you might be able to get together and inspect the tranny, look up his e-mail address and give him a shout.
