Finally got a pair of correct exhaust tips. How far out are they supposed to extend from the bumper? And, how did the factory attach them to the tailpipes? Clamps or welds?

According to the assembly manual, they are attached by clamps. They hang .88" below the bottom of the bumper and extend past the bottom edge of the bumper 2.44".

Some shops attach them by using 2 or 3 small spot welds but this ruins the chrome where the spot weld is.

I understand that 69 extensions are slightly different than 70-72, something about rounded edges... anybody know for sure?
thanx

I actually got some exhaust work done a while ago, I went ahead and installed two 3 chambered flowmasters(40 series)along with 3.5 angle cut tips. This is just my personal opinion of course but I think it gives a real aggresive look to the car, especially from the rear.I haven't seen the tips your mentioning but I hope you find what your looking for, good luck Jimmy.

Put a set on the black COPO we did. They were originals that we rechromed. Someone has reproduced these in small quantities, but I have not seen them in a while. I dont believe that the rolled tips were used on all cars in 69 after talking with some original owners and also some original cars have been found without them. Right now I dont know weather it was a supplier deal, or possibly only on chambered ex. cars as we have seen two orig. chambered cars that have had them. Dont know for sure. Anyone have anything for facts?

There was a thread on TC a while back where I believe someone said early '69's all got rolled tips. Then later in the model year they were phased out in favor of straight cut tips due to supplier cost.

I would like to know the same information for a 70 Chevelle. I can't go .88" below the bumper, there is a valance that runs there. Does anybody have the specs or information as to how far past the rear of a 70 those exhaust tips run?

I have seen three different sets of exhaust tips for the 1969 Chevelle. The rolled tip. the straight edge with part number, and the straight edge without part number. I know of some original cars that came with the straight edge tips with no part number. I believe the straight edge tips with the part number stamped on them are the service replacements. Not sure which cars got the rolled tips but not all cars had them when new.

I believe 1969 used the rolled tip. Then 1970 had the edge at the end of tip.No part numbers were stamped on either from Factory. They both share the same part# on box and in Catalog. In 1971-72 Chevrolet began stamping Part#'s on these tips from Factory and parts Dept.

I thought I heard something about the rolled type being first design, and this was changed to an unrolled end in the second design due to corrosion problems (either actual or anticipated). I don't know if this was a supported claim or just someone's theory.

I bought an SS new in 1969.
It did not have rolled edges.
(I wish I still had it, rolled edges or not.)

There is a great comparison picture on the back cover of NCOA April 1993 as well as a Great article about this subject and the differences.I don't have a scanner so maybe someone else can print it?
I am sure some cars did and did not get them.My comment was just a generalization. In the real world Chevrolet was inconsistent.I recently saw a set of 1969 Rolled tips NOS in the Box at a local swapmeet. The guy in front of me asked how much and the seller replied $50.00. Much to my dismay he pulled out his money faster then I. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

One of the challenges in restoring a Chevelle is that there was a high volume of units produced in five different U.S. assembly plants plus other countries. In comparison, the Corvette was more like a hobby for Chevy with low volume and one assembly plant. Chevelle had multiple parts suppliers located all over the Country. Most likely the rolled edge tip was the early design but we do not know if it was supplied to all the assembly plants or just some of the plants. It is difficult to say which cars had them and which didn't.

The "rolled-tip" exhaust tips were used on early production Chevelles up to March-April, so I'm told. As supplies dried up at different assembly plants, they began using the new improved design.

The design was changed because the "rolls" retained moisture and they'd rust. So depending on your '69's build date, rolled tips may NOT be correct.

Hope this helps.
