Anybody have any ideas on the best way to ship a 70 ss dash housing. No gauges, just
the plastic housing. Its coming from out of state.

Or anyone near Chicago that wants to do me
a big favor?

Thanks,
Rob

buy cheap 1x4 lumber, a box and packing material.box that puppy and build a make-shift frame around the box.if you have ever been on a loading dock at a trucking company you will know what the lumber is for.

I just received a replacement instrument panel (plastic) for my 69 from a guy in PA. He shipped it in a cardboard box with lots of 'peanuts' and other packing material. Came via USPS Priority Mail, for about $12, and arrived undamaged.

wrap it in a complete 70 dash, then wrap that in a complete chevelle body, then wrap that w/ a professional paintjob and send it to me http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

70 dash housing will be too big for USPS. They have a maxium of 108" length + Width + Girth. I was just barely able to send a 68 grille so I don't thing a 70-72 dash will be under the 108".

The crate idea sounds good, but another option is to get a box for a front or rear bumper/fascia from a body shop. These boxes are usually well-constructed.

I shipped and had my 69 SS dash returned through the USPS. Big box and a lot of "peanuts". The box was 106 inches in length, width and girth.

My dash was doubled boxed, and caught a ride on a Greyhound bus from Utah to Detroit. I met it at the bus station when the bus arrived.

I have to disagree with the person who said it is too big for UPS. I shipped one no problem, around $20. Good luck.

Your right on he 108" thing with UPS, but it can be done.

I shipped a 71 das & cluster from Canada to the US. Packed it in a double box, one from each end, lots of crumpled newspaper to fill the voids and cushon it. It made it ok.

It definately was a tight fit though. The UPS clerk was VERY ANAL about the 108" maximum though, so be sure your within it or they won't take it.

Goo luck,

Doug

I shipped a 1970 SS dash housing thru UPS. I had a shipping center package it and that way it was not rejected by UPS. They had the right size boxs and the filled the box with foam peanuts. It was shipped to Canada and it arrived in good condition. Just be sure to have it insured for the value.
