: did chevy make a 3.90 gear ratio?

i came upon a good used set of gm gears. they are out of a 68 camaro. the guy says the ratio is 3.90. did gm make a 3.90 ratio??

Yes,they did.Chevrolet did not put it in the car at the assembly line.But it was available over their parts counter.

Take a look at the end of the pinion gear. There will, or should be, several numbers. Somewhere among these numbers will be 2 numbers, kind of by themself, and maybe seperated by a -, such as 11-43. This designates the number of teeth on the pinion and on the ring gear. 43 divided by 11 = 3.90.

Yes, I bought a new Z-28 in 1968 with factory installed 4.11 gears. I did't like the high RPM cruising so I swapped with a friend who also had a 68 Z-28. His car had factory installed 3.90 rear end gears. Lost a little acceleration with the 3.90's, but overall I liked them better.
