Like the door lock will slow down a thief on my 1972 Chevelle. That's not bad enough, I just found out last week that my ignition lock doesn't need a key. What is wrong is the steering wheel locks okay but the two wings will turn without a key unlocking the wheel and starting the engine. It works as if there is a key in it. Anyone know where I should start to fix this condition? Is it just the lock? Or is it more involved?
Thanks...

you might try spraying wd-40 in the lock cylinder and work the key in and out,the tumblers maybe stuck,if that does not work go ahead and replace the lock cylinder, they come with the little chrome "wings" for about 10 bucks. a repair manual will help with the replacement process.hope this helps.JIMK

You might consider a new lock cylinder ($15) and a bit of time to install it. Actually, your situation is not as bad as the one I was in last week. I put the key in the slot to leave the gas station and the lock would not unlock. Dang! $44 for towing it to my house and $15 for a new lock.

mine will lock if it's turned all the way back but if i turn it forward with the key, i can take the key out http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif it's kinda fun, i can leave the car running and take the keys with me and lock the door, or if i need to run back into the house, etc. i can just leave the car running and grab the keys..... i enjoy it.

My 69's the same as Chevhell. It won't turn from the locked position unless the key is in.But once she's started I can pull the key. I remember my old Chevys doing this when they were only a couple of years old.
My buddys 69' Olds 442 does the same as well.
