: More Blown 540 update....
Tonyr Oct 22nd, 01, 9:28 AM Thank you all for your feedback on my previous post.
Therefore, here is my update:
The pistons are in. The short block is pretty much completed. The next steps are to special order the push rods to properly fit, install the heads, pull the old motor to get the blower, intake manifold and carbs.
Along with the old motor, they will pull the tranny to install the new Art Carr tranny. The old tranny is sold to one of TC's members (Jeff B)and I will send it to him after it is pulled.
The motor is looking really nice.
A couple of people had asked what kind of paint we used on the motor? Engine primer and paint are by Krylon. Nothing special.
I still have a list of email addresses for those whom emailed me. In case something happens here, I'll email you pics direct. But it looks like it's going to be o.k. (for now).
Anyway, here are some pics from Friday:

Xtreme70SS396 Oct 22nd, 01, 10:52 AM I'm really glad you're posting these again, thanks.
I thought you were going to ceramic-coat your piston tops - is that done yet?
Out of curiousity, what made you choose those rockers? I'm assuming you did some research so I won't have to...
Email me if you don't want to respond here.
Looking great!
DaleM Oct 22nd, 01, 9:18 PM Tony, be sure to take the plastic off ALL the rockers this time - not just the intakes. Contrary to COMP Cams tech support, the plastic does not help retain oil. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Seriously, looks like you're on your way again. Wish I wasn't 1300+ miles away, your old "small 396" would have fit nicely between the fenders of my 67!

DutchChevelle1970 Oct 23rd, 01, 5:18 AM Nice rockers to!
Tonyr Oct 23rd, 01, 7:50 AM You guys are too funny http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
The reason with these rockers are they are the strongest material. Kinda heavy though. But, built to last.
The pistons are coated. See here:
Ceramic coated pistons (http://www.edigitalphotos.com/chevelle/ceramic.jpg)
Dale, I hadn't thought of removing the plastic http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I used a Canon G1 digital camera. It's nice and easy to use. There's a G2 out already.
327Chevelle Oct 23rd, 01, 8:52 AM ahh a quick question.
what exactly is the advantage to having ceramic coated pistons?
i have never heard of this before.
oh and thanks for continuing to post the pics, it brings a smile to my face everytime i see it getting closer. i'm looking to some day build me a 540, only not blown.(don't know if i could handle THAT much horse)
Tonyr Oct 23rd, 01, 9:35 AM The ceramic coating reduces frictional losses and reduces the chances of galling and scuffing.
Ceramic coating on the crown insulates the piston. The reflective surface reduces carbon build up and increases the rate of combustion.
In theory, with this coating, the engine power increases of 5% are achieved through more ignition advance, and a higher boost level obtained when supercharging.
Midnight Marauder Oct 23rd, 01, 10:06 AM Tony, as always , beutiful. Keep in mind that one day...one day, I will see this beast in person whether at a show down there or if I am on business in the area....I cant be stopped! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif, keep em coming.....Your just a sick man for this....sick! I tell you. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

327Chevelle Oct 23rd, 01, 1:21 PM aaaah i see, sounds like a winner to me.
how much more does it cost to get ceramic coated pistons?
RussD Oct 23rd, 01, 2:12 PM Tony,
Looks bitchen bud! Glad to see it comin right along. I dont know exactly where Foothill Ranch is, but if its not too far from Pasadena, might you consider meeting up with some of the SoCal guys up at Fuddrucker's on November 10th??
Best of Luck with the rest of the project!

Tonyr Oct 26th, 01, 8:16 AM Steve,
Thanks for the invite. However, my car won't be ready by the 10th. I had thought it was going to be ready by Halloween, but at the rate the shop is going, I can tell it won't be ready by the 10th.
The shop is taking in more work than they can handle. This is the hold up. I am not too thrilled and I'm trying to be patient.
Foothill Ranch is next door to Irvine, if you know where Irvine is.
I had hoped to have the car completed by Halloween so I can cruise the neighborhood to scare the kids and their parents http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I would have dressed up my Chevelle as a U.S. tank (plowing through Afghanistan) with a big a$$ blower on it http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
327Chevelle,
I don't know how much it costs to have the pistons coated. Haven't seen the bill yet and don't want to either http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I'll ask though.
Anyway, here's a picture of the latest update with the heads on. Waiting for the roller rockers to arrive. The next step would be to pull the old motor for its blower, intake and carbs.
Heads are on! (http://www.edigitalphotos.com/chevelle/102301/block.jpg)
Thanks.
