: 68 EL CAMINO SS 396 HELP WITH A GOOD DEAL?
stacey honn Oct 22nd, 01, 9:12 AM I'm looking at a true 68 SS and I'm wondering if I could make some money off this deal. This car is original paint, very minor body work and a new paint would be nice. A couple of trim pieces are missing.
The car looks to me like a very easy body off restoration. Frame has powdery rust. Looks like it has been garaged all it's life.
Bench seat with a four speed. No air. $7,500
I already have a 67 SS chevelle. I really don't want to take on another project. BUT,
is this a deal I shouldn't pass up.
I'm told there aren't too many of the 68 SS elky's.
Let me know what you think?

Thad Oct 22nd, 01, 5:54 PM Stacey,
If I wasn't working on the funding of a ragtop, I'd be racing you to get at it.
I've got kinda of a secret goal to own a 68 SS-396 Coupe, Convertible, and ElCamino.
Just don't tell the wife http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. (I said I'd be done if she lets me get the Convertible.) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/tongue.gif
Oh yeah, around here that would be a super desireable car, at least I should say that you could buy it, and in a year or so I'll give you what you paid for it.
Nice 67 by the way.

Bomber '67 Oct 23rd, 01, 12:22 AM Stacey, I don't mean this to be discouraging, but I've usually found that when someone asks the question the way you have the following usually applies:
1) you do not have enough experience to properly assess the condition of the vehicle and how much money and time it will take to bring it to the next level.
2) you have forgotten to deduct both the cost of parts/outsourced work AND the value of your labor from the probable sale price/value of the completed car. Let me put a different spin on this: let's say you are looking a two '68 SS Elkys. One is very nice, needs nothing and is selling for $15,000 (and maybe even has some room for price negotiation). The other needs some minor bodywork, trim pieces, paint and some other unknowns to be discovered later and is selling for $7,500. A quality paint job, removing all trim and with some body disassembly (to do the paint properly) should easily run in the $4,000 to $7,000 range. Point is that the $7,500 car can quickly approach the $15,000 car...only difference is that you get to enjoy one right away, and the other you will have to wait while it is in the paint shop etc.
But what do I know, really I would be thrilled for you to prove me wrong. But just a word of caution; beware that the higher the price, the slower the likely sales process - I.E., the buyers become fewer in number as the sales price gets larger (more people in the bottom end of the market than anywhere else).
Best of luck, Thomas
Oh yeah, I'm definitely in the bottom feeder group, I originally paid $1,150 for my '67 Bomber almost two years ago, and $2,000 for the Plum Mist '67 two months ago.

*New* 468 on its way - going Big Block!
Steve R Oct 23rd, 01, 1:01 AM $7500 doesn't sound to bad for a good project car that is a keeper. However, I don't think there is that much room to make a profit. Prices for SS El Camino's seem to lag that of SS coupes by a considerable amount and is likely to remain that way. By the way I picked a loaded 68 SS El Camino with some right front body damage a year ago for $1500.

Mr69 Oct 23rd, 01, 2:37 AM Only 5,190 1968 SS396 El Camino's were made !!! I passed on a super nice one about 10 years ago for $2000. whoops !

jeffc Oct 23rd, 01, 6:39 AM I own two 'caminos and I got them both for a tremendously low price. The market for Elkys is nothing like the market for coupes. You might make money, but you'll have to own it for a long time to do it at $7500. IMHO, YMMV, etc...

stacey honn Oct 23rd, 01, 4:47 PM I checked the elky out really good. I know for a keeper you would be hard pressed to find a better one. I also found out the engine is a EF code. Now if it were the EG 396 she would be in the garage right now.
No special SS options either. No gauges or disc brakes. Only thing as an option I saw was PS. I did check the vin and it is a true matching # SS.
I could always offer the guy a lot less and if I get it, fine, and if not, oh well.

Rainer Oct 23rd, 01, 11:45 PM I agree with most of the others here. The elky market lags behind the coupes. And of the 66-70 models, the 68s seem to be at the bottom as well. So, although the production numbers may be low, its not a very hot item. A good deal at $7500? Probably. A money-maker? Probably not. Good luck whichever route you go.
