I found a 71 Elcamino in the newspaper that reads as follows:

quote:
1971 Elcamino custom, SS, exc cond.almost restored, immac., top to bottom, must see $2000 mint

I called out of curiosity more than anything and discoverd the price is not a misprint but the rest is yet to be seen. He said it has a rebuilt '79 (truck block) 350 with all new brackets, TH400 with a B&M shift kit and rebuilt 12 bolt posi. Rear glass and windshield have been replaced also. New seat covers, carpet, and head liner are installed. Three weeks ago he had it advertised for $3000 but had very little response so he lowered the price to sell. Without going into details he told me he was in a financial pinch and needed to sell it QUICK

What are some hidden SS details to look for?

Did all SS options have the round gauges?

Anybody have a picture of the rear, of a '71 Elcamino that is?

Good choice! I paid slightly more than that, and I have to replace the floorpans and the engine! If the car is solid, I'd do it.

There are two pics in my sig below, "The Project" is from the right rear. I have a straight on shot I can email, if you'd like.

I can't answer the options question, since mine is a Sprint, but it has the "SS" dash (guages, tach, speedo, clock).

Good luck!

All SS's had round pod dash, with or without tach etc. However, a non-SS could be ordered with factory tach, so any non-SS that you see with round gauge pod would have factory tach, etc.

As for what it looks like from the rear, any 70-72 would look the same. The taillights would come to the edge of the quarter to tailgate, and would have the reverse lights in the tailgate. While 68-69's would be similar, but the taillights would end about 1" shy of the tailgate.

This thing was not even close to the add

The engine may be as he stated, but with a ONE barrel

The seat had a CHEAP brown plastic cover.

No carpet!

No headliner!

No SS emblems anywhere!

Square style gauge cluster!

More cancer than a lepper colony.

Immac. condition? More like "almost ready for the wrecking yard!"
If he was asking $700 I would have a kung-fu grip on the last $200.

It was rather intresting trip through the RV/trailer park though. I thought it was weird to see 50' trailer homes on ten foot stilts, must be a flood zone. As I slowly drove my '67 Elcamino around the park I got a lot of missing tooth smiles. One guy shouted with a big grin, "Hey...it's not Sunday"

It was real, and it was fun, but it wasn't real fun.

Cecil and Steve, thanks for you input anyway.
