I'm working on a 1974 350 with hei, Edlebrock intake, and a Holly 650. The thing is back firing through the carb and smells bad. I want to start from scratch. I pulled the dis. cap off and when #1 piston is at tdc, the rotor is pointing at either the steering wheel or the battery. I know the car will run like this and #1 is where you make it on the cap,but where is it set at from the factory. I always thought it should point at #1 spark plug. Where is #1 on the cap. I thought it was the second spot from where the ignition wire clips to the cap. I want to pull the dis. and set it like it should be so I know it's right. Should I point it at #1 spark plug or what. Am I on the right track. Any help is appreciated,,,thanks, Cal

Yes, I believe it points to the #1 spark plug. I think you're right about the location of #1 on the cap, too. Never really looked into that but I think that's where mine is.

I used to have number 1 as the first terminal past the trap door on a points type distributor, somewhere around the 7 oclock position...with it popping back through the carburetor, it may be a little retarded, advance it a tooth.
