: Thoughts on fiberglass fenders
69CHEVELLEDUDE Nov 26th, 01, 4:10 PM What do you guys think of the quality of the fiberglass fenders on the market today. Are they worth the $150 as a maybe a temporary hold-over for about a year. Me fenders aren't to bad but my parents are forcing me to paint the car and I don't have the skills to fix the fenders myself. Would fiberglass one's be a good solution until I can get around to fixing the metal one's? Thanks in advance guys.

drptop70ss Nov 26th, 01, 4:46 PM Fiberglass fenders are normally designed for the racing crowd, so they end up thin for light weight and dont always have all the mounting points for the rest of the body panels, and also probably wont allow the use of a steel hood and stock hood hinges. Are your fenders that bad now? A quick fix that will last a couple years would be to slam some fiberglass in the hole and finish it with bondo. Or pop rivet some metal over the rust and bondo it. Yes these are quick and dirty, and no I wouldnt do it during a resto, but if you gotta fix it for now and dont have the cash or time to do it right it will work. You can always cut out the stuff later and fix it later when it bubbles out. I wouldnt go with fiberglass on a street car myself.

Never forget Earnhardt!
Steve R Nov 26th, 01, 7:18 PM I would think that you should be able to find some pretty decent fenders in So. Cal for $150. Have you tried any of the specialty wrecking yards in your area?

69CHEVELLEDUDE Nov 28th, 01, 4:22 PM I haven't checked a lot of wrecking yards. My fenders aren't that bad its just I lack the skills to fix it. Bondo has never failed me before and reguardless of what people say, the stuff is great for fixing not resto cars. I think ill stick with that plan. But I am still taking other opinions. Thanks guys.

John_Muha Nov 28th, 01, 7:49 PM Check with Memory Lane. They gave me a number that I since lost. Had some local outfit that swore they could pound out fenders and use little Bondo.
69CHEVELLEDUDE Nov 29th, 01, 1:50 PM Has anyone purchased fiberglass fenders from Restore Classics online? They say that the fenders will bolt into stock locations. Do you think I will have to use a ffiberglass hood or could I use my stock hood?

But they have less than nice for a little less.

Jimmy P Dec 3rd, 01, 9:52 AM Please listen to Dave. Fiberglass fenders are good for racing. If you don't have the 'skills' to fix the steel fenders, you're going to have your hands more than full trying to fit, mount and finish fiberglass fenders. Can't use a steel hood either. The skills you need for repairing your fenders are a 'learned skill', not a god-given one. Get a book or a video tape or ask us in the body section. Fixing what you have is the best route.
