: once and for all 67 frame mounts

Got a 67 and I'm puttin in a 454. I'm sure it has SM frame mounts. I dropped the BB in and the mounts will work, they seem a little tight though. As far as getting the bolt through I mean.
Now I've read they are different. One article says drivers side is taller. one article says they both are beefier.
It seems that I can use mine with just a little elbow grease. Any reason I shouldn't?

Although I havn't compared the two side by side, The BB mounts are said to be a little beefier.

If you have a mild BB and are not racing regularly the SM mounts will PROBABLY be OK.

Make sure you use Grade 8 hardeware and or weld the mount to the frame. And use High Quality motor mounts with a safety interlock.

Thats just my opinion, If anyone disagrees let us know.

Same mount in Chevelle according to local resto guru. Camaros had different mounts, sits bb up 1" and over a freckle.

I used the original SBC frame mounts with Moroso solids when I put the new 427 in my '66 Malibu; engine sits about 1" higher and about 3/4" to the left of center (towards driver side),but level. With a Victor Jr/Holley/4"tall K&N(dropbase)installed, the hood required a hole cut (hood was damaged in the center any way)to let the combo stick out by 3.75".Am adding a 5" cowl to cover.Be sure to measure before you put in solid mounts,or you might have to perform surgery.

Want more confusion? My 67 SS had a small block in it when I first bought it. I bought another 67 SS for a parts car and the 396 in it turned out to be a 69 engine. This last resto/custom, I bought new engine mounts for a 67 396. They weren't wide enough (?). Seems the frame towers took a wider lip engine mount.

Engine mounts and 2283 and 2285 are numbers that come to mind. Don't remember which I bought (2283 I think) but they didn't fit.

I don't know if the frame towers were changed eons ago or if they're original. Some day when I change the engine, I'll look into it.

well here is one for ya. I bought new motor mounts for a 67 396. They bolt to the motor fine. But when you take one and put it down on the frame mount it is about a quarter inch too wide for the frame mount.
I figured I would just shim it up so the gap is tighted up. What do think?

I am re-using stock 283 frame mounts for a crate 454HO. I used Energy Suspension motor mounts with the safety interlock, which raises the engine just a little due to the hardware. Otherwise the engine fits like a glove in my 67. Didn't have to dimple the oil pan, half inch clearance above the cross member. Go for it.

1/4 inch is OK, that would be 1/8 on either side of the frame mount, if it was too tight you'd never get the eng. to sit in when installing. Bolt em up you'll be fine.

It is my understanding that there were definitely different 67 SB & BB mounts. A BB engine will work fine with SB mounts as long as both the engine side & frame side pieces were selected for a SB & vise versa if installing a SB w/BB mounts.

Stacey, the frame to engine mount brackets are different from small block to big block, however all of the hole locations are the same. The difference is that the big block brackets have a strengthening rib that runs around the bottom toward the front, also it has a notch to clear the interlocking tab in the big block engine mount.Phil is correct in stating that you must use small block engine mounts with small block frame to engine mount brackets, but you can use small block or big block engine mounts with big block frame to engine mount brackets. If you try to use the big block engine mounts on the small block frame to engine mount brackets, the interlocking tab will hit the bracket before the engine mount gets in the correct possition, you wont be able to get it to line up. I found this out the hard way. I had to cut the tab off before I could get everything to line up. Here are some pictures that might help, the big block mounts are in the middle.
