I've been looking arround at rear ends and found this...
http://www.artmorrison.com/F_FordRearEnd.htm

Does this sound like a good deal? Trying to upgrade the 7.5 10 bolt in my 81 El Camino (I either want a Ford 9 or a 8.5 10 bolt).

Prices don't look too bad. And I don't think you'll have to worry about tearing it up once you install it.

Why the question mark for a screen name ?

I have a 9inch Ford with 31 spline axles in my 65 Chevelle 2dr. wagon from Currie Enterprises, it fit great works great, takes about 2hours to change gear raito and if you break an axle or spider gears the axle and wheel won't come off !!!!!
Great Swap,
Gene

Thats way high! Correct me if im wrong but that is what they want for just a housing. You still have to supply carrier, gears, axels, brakes etc. Call around to some of the smaller race shop fab type places in your area. I bought my housing ready to bolt in my 78' for 350.00 I still have over a grand in it with moser axles. If you start with a housing that expensive you are talking close to 2 grand to do it right.

That's about what they're going for around here, give or take a few dollars. There's a guy in Oklahoma who builds them for Chevelles and I think he gets around $475 for his.
Like I said, give or take.

Ya, I'm not all for having to buy everything else... but if I can't find a GM 8.5 10 bolt I might have to go with something like that. I need to talk to a friend down the street who took his T-Type to the junk yard, I'm hoping it still has the rear end in it.

Dunno why I used ? for a name... my real name is kenny, think that was taken. If I remember I was kind of in a hurry.

Actually, wait.. do all T-Types have the 8.5 rear end?

I am not a expert on gn's but from what I have been told all 86 and 87 t-types and GN's(intercooled cars) had the 8.5 If the car is a year or 2 older (non intercooled) it is a hit and miss.

Kenny,

I am not sure, but what about a mid 80's Monte? Heck i have seen some those priced around what the A.M.E. 9 inch housing is goin' for. For that price(complete A.M.E. 9inch) you could also call Moser and have them build you a 12 bolt. Good Luck www.moserengineering.com (http://www.moserengineering.com)

I went the same route as Gene.
I bought a 9" from Currie in CA.,3:70 gears. With the the 11" drums, powder coated housing, and shipping, it came to $2726.55.
Expensive, but I like to do the job right the first time. I didn't want to purchase a lesser grade unit and bust it up and then spent more time removing the broken one and then going throught the hassel of installing another one. www.geocities.com/mobiletools1/Mvc-004s.jpg (http://www.geocities.com/mobiletools1/Mvc-004s.jpg)

I think the mid 80's monties have the same rear end as my El Camino. From what I understand it was only the Grand Nationals and T-Types that had the 8.5 10 bolt... I could be wrong.

I might have to look into Moser. You think they would be able to build a 8.5 10 bolt?

About 3hrs north of you, there's a junkyard that had a bunch of "G" body posies. Some of them are from Olds. They are just stacked in piles all over the place. They would probably have one for you. It's calld B&O auto wrecking, I don't have their number cuz they are close enough to just stop by. Give 'em a try. Jason

only the GNX had a 8.5 rearend, everything else got the 7.5. BTW, there is a 8.5 GNX rearend on ebay right now, I don't have the number, but you can search GNX, this is a rare rearend, so take note of the bids.

It's time to get some correct information here about the 8.5 rears.

Early Buick GN's might have had a 7.5 or 8.5. The later GN's in addition to the GNX had 8.5's with 3.42 gears. The only difference with the GNX was it had a long ladder bar style traction bar like the late model Camaros have. There were only 542 some odd GNX's built, so getting a rear frome one of them is near impossible.

The Turbo T-type also had the 8.5 just like the GN's. Also, the Olds Cutlass 442 and Hurst Olds had the 8.5 rear with a 3.73 gear set.

The Monte Carlo NEVER had an 8.5 rear.

The 7.5 can be identified by the more sqaured off cover and two little pointed "fangs" that hang down on either side of the housing center section. The 8.5 has a more rounded cover and has two sqaure nubbs that hang down.

It should not be hard to find a complete 8.5 rear for abot $600-800. I see them all the time advertised here on the net.

For addtitional information, check with:

I also have a links page which has many other g-body related sites.

Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately some dumbass decided to turn in front of my mom and my car is pretty well jacked. I’ll have to wait on the rear end, have to get the whole front done. As of right now I don’t even know what they’re going to do. Right now I’m just hoping the frame isn’t bent.
