Did all 69 big blocks come with the "Tonawanda" decals on the chrome valve covers. If so, where is the correct location for them.

Thanks gang.

Hi Don. I don't know for sure, but I think they all did come with that decal. On my car it only has one decal and it's only on the passenger side valve cover. I can measure for you when I get home but it is close to the front top of the valve cover. I'm fairly sure because my car had not been altered.

Sounds like just one near the front of the passenger side cover. So be it.

Thanks guys.

Don, center of valve cover(up & down) at the front ending just before the valve cover turns down. Hope this is understandable.

Hey Don,

According to the Chevelle SS restoration guide (an indepth personal favorite) page 15. The Tonawanda engine decal was not used from 1965 to 1969 with chrome valve covers.

Let me know if you ever need help with your 69. Me and Paul Herd will square you away.

Jody - thanks for the measurements, I appreciate it.

John - my copy of that resto guide was loaned to a friend several weeks ago thus the posting here. As mentioned in a previous thread I started, I don't put much faith in a lot of the information in that book, seems to be several errors.

The only resource I have is my 69 Camaro stuff and pictures show the decal on them.

Some of the early posts in here seem to be very definitive. Unless somebody jumps in and is 100% sure there should not be a decal, I will assume there should.

Thanks again.

Hey Nick - I don't believe in picking anything apart, if I ever have any criticism of a car I just keep my mouth shut. No good can come from spouting negative thoughts around. Yes, you certainly critique a car during the purchase process but that's usually the end of it.

I'm still learning about this Chevelle stuff and this is the best place to get answers. More questions may be coming after I finally get to drive this Blue Beast and that's still a few months away.

And yes, I am "bored stiff" neck deep in all this white stuff. The worst winter we've had in many years.

I suppose you're out driving that black LS6 and yellow 67 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif

Don,

One thing I've noticed about these is that the ones I've seen that are original are usually a little crooked. I think some guy pretty low on the food chain got the job of applying these stickers.

Don, whether he was busting my collunes or not ( that NY Italian for ballz), a local Tonawanda worker who owns a "100 pt" 66 Chevelle, claims that no stickers were ever put on the "special" hipo mills like L88, L89. At least as regards my 67. So while I have one on there ( it seems de rigeur among resto guys), I suspect its not correct and may indeed be removed.

If you dont have one, its probably correct.

I wish I remembered this guys name , and I will run into him this summer and ask again.

Let wifie row the gears in my red 427 tripower 67, and we'll talk about ME swappin for old blue... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

OK fellas heres the gospel according to the engine plant at Tonwanda, many thnx to Vicki who runs their web site!

Dear Gene,

I realize its been awhile since you heard from me, but you have to
understand this was an enormous undertaking involving half a dozen engineer
and tech types from not only at Tonawanda, but from others in the
Corporation who were involved with Manufacturing Development.

The jury is now in, ALL motors produced for 1967 through 1972 did carry the
Number #1 Team Logo.

Below is the list broken down by year:

1967:

Big Block:
366 c.i.
396 c.i.
427 c.i.
Small Block:
283 c.i.
327 c.i.
Corvair:
164 c.i.
4 cylinder:
194 c.i.
6 cylinder:
230 c.i.

1968:

Big Block:
366 c.i.
396 c.i.
427 c.i.
Small Block:
307 c.i.
327 c.i.
Corvair
164 c.i.
4 cylinder:
194 c.i.
6 cylinder:

1969:

400 c.i.
Vega

1971:

Big Block
366 c.i.

427 c.i.
454 c.i.
Small Block
307 c.i.
350 c.i.
400 c.i.
Vega
140 c.i.

1972:

Big Block
366 c.i.
402 c.i.
427 c.i.
454 c.i.
Small Block
307 c.i.
350 c.i.

Vega
140 c.i.

Had one or two of the people we had to assemble for this task not been
available, this would never have been completed. GM does not keep historical
records any longer at the manufacturing sites. Historical pieces and
information is being handled at one main facility now, and even they did not
have this information.

Very nice results. But what about the Romulus,Michigan plant that produced the small percentage of Big Block engines.
My understanding is that they did not get ANY I.D. decal at all.Did she confirm this in any way,or does she only have access to Tonawanda records?

Looking in the "Noland Adams" as Vette guys call it ("The complete Corvette restoration and technical guide-vol.2 1963 through 1967") shows some 427 engines in Corvettes in 1966 with the sticker. These are GM photos, pages 356 and 357.
