: 3.55's or 3.73's Can't decide.
red2rider Jan 27th, 01, 8:09 PM 2 weeks away from sending the rear out and I can't decide which gears. I've had 3.42 to 4.11's so I know what to expect, it's just hard trying to figure out how the car will be mostly used. But wait, a buddy tells me he's found a 18 foot car trailor for 300$$. Who knows maybe 4.11 for the 1/8 mile track here. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
drptop70ss Jan 27th, 01, 9:21 PM 3:55 for a 14" tire and 3:73s for the 15".

SS_Sean Jan 28th, 01, 8:45 AM 3.73's for sure!!
I put 3.55's in my '71 and regret it now. Car runs great on the highway, but I don't cruise it anywhere since my gas mileage is ludicrous.

TINMAN Jan 28th, 01, 9:09 AM I thinking about doing the same. I have a 3:31 rearend. Going to 3:55 wouldn't be much of a difference or should I go with a 3:73

Gandalf80 Jan 28th, 01, 9:36 AM IMHO going from 3.31 to 3.55 is a waste of time, I don't think you will even notice a difference. Go to at least 3.73.

Randy Mosier Jan 28th, 01, 3:28 PM It depends on how you've built your engine, and the type of driving you plan to do. The 3:55s are the best compromise for both highway cruising and occasional strip use. If you plan to drive this car to work a few times a month, then maybe the 3:55s will be better for you. If you just plan to cruise it on weekends with occasional visits to the track, then go with the 3:73s.
plain 69 Jan 28th, 01, 5:19 PM If you like turning around 3000 rpms at 60mph with 27" tall tires go with the 3.73. I did. The only drawback is my friends like to drive 70-75 mph on the highway and I don't feel like turning the old 454 that much. They really pick up good out of the hole though.
The 3.55's would be a good compromise on the freeway though if you want to drive somewhere like Chevellabration.
red2rider Jan 28th, 01, 5:20 PM Well the car will mostly see rod runs and cruising locally with a few runs at the strip. I was even thinking about getting another rear set up for the long hauls (ie.) the chevellebration coming up. And then have a rear set up for the regular use. I'd even through a set of 4.11's in but that would definately keep me from driving it to TN. in june. I'm checking into a trailor right now for those distant shows but it will be another 6 months or so before I sell a vehicle to get the truck that I want. What do you think?? The motor is a 30 over 396 rect heads 11.1 comp, Comp XE 574-284 cam soon to be m-22 going in or swapping to a 200-4r. I've got a set of 15" welds getting ready to go on and will save the factory mags for some of the shows. I'll probably put the BFG drag radials on the welds and swap wheels as needed. Thanks RandyB..
red2rider Jan 28th, 01, 5:27 PM Hey tinman: That's a nice ride you got there. I was looking at the motor pic and was wondering if you've ever run the car with that breather off? I use to have abreather like that awhile back and was doing some tuning one day and left it off for a quick run, and was amazed at how much hp the motor gained when it was off. They really do choke the motor down quit a bit. Are you having a hood clearance problem? I would swap it out if you could. But like I said, that's a real nice ride you got there.
TINMAN Jan 29th, 01, 11:18 AM The dented breather didn't give it away did it? I've had clearance problems since I changed the intake and carb(holley dp). Used to have cast iron intake and edelbrock carb and I have since changed to an edelbrock triangle air cleaner and filter and rear of hood is about a half inch higher than the fender. Need to find a smaller triangle air filter, the one I have is 3".

ChevelleCLM Jan 29th, 01, 2:54 PM I have a 69 with 2 differentials set up for it. My 12 bolt has 3.73's and my 10 bolt has 2.56's. I can swap between the two in about 2 hours with a few breaks in there somewhere. The 3.73's go in when it is strip time, and the 2.56's go in there for crusing time. This is my alternative for a 6 speed. If you pull the axles out of the differential you can pull the brakes off at the backing plate and this will save you alot of time. There is a 1 second difference at the strip. but I get about twice the mileage at 75mph. Just a thought.
red2rider Jan 29th, 01, 4:49 PM Yeah it's starting to look like the way I will go. I found another 12 bolt 2:73 chevelle rear here in KY for a 150$. Think I will take it and get the set up done and keep my other 12 bolt for everyday use. I think it'll be the 4:11's. Then maybe a 5 speed or overdrive later. Thanks for the comments guys.
