I have a 1980 TH400.I dont know how many miles it has on it.I got it and it was in good condition.I've had it in my 64 malibu and no problems and then when I switched cams and went to an edelbrock rpm cam something strange happened. I noticed that it started slipping all of a sudden. The fluid level was right on.One thing though,I have never adjusted the modulator. Also when I removed the tranny to inspect further I noticed that the vacuum line was really loose so as there was a vacuum leak I suspect. So what would you do? My initial reaction was that the tranny was going south so I bucked up and bought TCI's pro master rebuild kit and a Hughes 3500 pro race converter.Should I spend the 300 bucks to have it rebiult or throw a tranny cooler in and go?Sorry for the long post but I need the advice. Thanks JIM

the vacuum leak at the modulator would of made your shifts late, and you would of had to accelerate harder to get the shift. If the trans was slipping while driving around, the modulator would not of caused that, and then it would be rebuild time.

How much movement up and down should I get at the output shaft?

Shouldn't be more than a 1/8 inch and even that is a bit too much. But did you know that having that 400turbo will cost a few more ponys compared to a 350. Just something to think about if your going to rebuild the 400 for the street. But then again you might be heavily dragracing. Give some more input on your combo please.

The story goes like this.I was racing a buddy of mine and we were at a stop sign I stabbed it and a way we went.It hooked hard in first shifted to secondhooked hard again but after it hooked it felt like the tires broke loose.Afterwards I went back to the starting line and no skid marks??????Thats the only problem Ive had with this tranny. But my moter combo is as such.
A 383 with all the good stuff. You know 4bolt main,4340 billet crankyada yada yada yada.My rear end is a 9 inch with a 350 psoi and my tires are 265/45/17's.So my weak link in the drive train is my tranny so please help!
Hey, if you have the transmission already out, and it slipped like you described, put the kit in it. I haven't had one yet that fixed itself. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
