: Help w/ a '70 Chevelle

I've had my Malibu since November 1999.
My parents kept it garage-kept until November 2000(when I got my license), driving it occasionally to make sure it stays functional.

I know very little about my car, now that I drive it. The previous owner, told me little tid-bits of information about the engine, but nothing extensive. I'm very interested in learning about mechanics, restoring, and modifying cars, but no one to teach me.

I was wondering if there's anyway I could take my car somewhere, and have them examine it and give me like a list of what I've got under the hood?

I live in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, CA. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

p.s.
It's a 1970 Chevelle Malibu, with a rebuilt 400 small block.

driver,
If you want to know what it is, post the engine information that is stamped on the front passenger side of the block, where the block meets the head. You might have to scrape off some grime to see it. Also, if you can tell us what the date and block casting numbers are, and pull off a valve cover and let us know what the head casting numbers are, they can easily be decoded. As far as telling whay is inside, you have to start taking things apart to do that. You won't find any shop to take it to where thay can just look and tell you what your cam is and what kind of pistons you have... Not without tearing your motor down.
Start with some casting numbers and block ID numbers. Post them and we will tell you what it is and also where to look up some of this information yourself. For example, go here>>> Mortec.Com (http://www.mortec.com)
Regards,
Jim R.

hey jason, im also from the san fernando valley, im in Arizona for college now though. I have a 70 malibu with a 350, awesome car. anyway, the best thing i can tell you other than the advice given above is to find some people in school who are into working on cars , and ask them questions too. Good luck

Thanks a lot, guys. I'll start looking for those numbers once the weather gets a little more stable, 'cause I'd have to open it up outside due to the space limitations in my garage.

I exchanged numbers with some guys working on Mustangs, during class on Friday. I didn't want to be a complete burden, and bother them all the time for help, so I'm trying to learn a little off the internet.

Thanks again,
Jason

If you have stock heads, you may be able to tell what they are from the boss marks on the front. This is not fool proof because Chevy used the same patterns on different heads. It might give you an idea until your ready to yank a cover.
Stay away from the Ford guys. If they were smart they would dump that junk.

Hey Jason, When you pop the hood, I hope you discover a rare type big block hiding in there. Good luck, Steve
