Does anyway have knowledge as to a "correct" chassis inspection marking for a '70. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif I am doing a '70 LS-5 Van Nuys convertible with over 100 rounds and can't see any markings left. I have pretty well documented Leeds cars but all the Van Nuys cars were high mileage and not much left. Also, with regards to under pan painting, these cars were also different there. Could you elaborate abit on what you mean when you say underpan painting was different?

I am referencing the floor pan and trunk area under the bottom of the car. Most of the Leeds, KC cars I have done were chassis black colored with a minimum of body paint overspray and a fair amount of sound deadener. The Texas cars had anything from a purpleish colored primer, black and a mix of several other colors. They also had a minimum of sound deadener applied. Each plant seems to have their own way of doing it but I haven't seen too many Van Nuys cars up close. Both of the converts I am doing are Van Nuys and these owners want them done "correct" but unfortunatey, they are too high of mileage to get a good example.

That's very interesting. Being someone who is always interested in "correct" restoration, I like to hear about any information that shows certain plants did things "differently." My 66, seen below, is a Freemont,CA built car and has some things that are not what I am used to seeing in the form of paint markings and the like. What do you attribute these differences in under body pan and trunk colors to, in your opinion/experience? If you don't mind, and so as mot to change the topic you started, I may e-mail you with some questions.

I think it all boiled down to the assembly line person doing the job. He got into a "habit" or routine as to how he applied paint just as you or I do in our every day jobs. With that in mind, when that person was sick or on vacation and someone elso took over, it was done differently. In all seriousness, every plant did it their own way and I have seen distinct differences I just haven't had that much experience with Van Nuys cars. Of the three LS-6 cars in Minneapolis which were all built on the same line within two weeks of each other, they all have identical inspection marks with the exception of numbers.

One other thing that may have a affect on this is where the cars traditionly were destined for, from the plants. Most Leeds car went to the salt belt states whill Arlington and LA cars the Southwest etc!
