: Use velcro to affix MSD???

Think I found a very nice little nook to fit an MSD in, just behind the glove box on top of the heater box. Not wanting to punch holes in the heater box, and the MSD resting on a flat surface....

I can simply use a sheet of velcro to hold the MSD down, but is it sturdy enough to handle the G's??? seems too easy.

MSD box and associated wiring must be hidden.

Gene,

Just a word of caution, if your going to mount it there you had better modify the heatsink to distribute more heat away from the box. Have you ever put your hand on there ? she gets warm & msd's just hate the heat......

That was thought #2. I have no idea how warm the top of the heater box gets. But it cant be materially different from the firewall.

Gene, it seems like everytime I've used velcro to secure something 'moderately' heavy, the glue always deteriorates and comes loose. Makes a mess to remove as well. Go for the screws in a secure, cool spot.

I'm with WES. Falt most always lies in the surface to velcro layer. Screws might can help, but cant' stick out to prevent flat mating.

If that area is hot, put a metal shield between the two units.

Your goin' through a lot of trouble just to be keeping that MSD guy out of sight aren't you. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

If you want an alternative to Velcro tape, 3M makes some stuff called Dual Lock tape. Instead of a hook and loop interlocking they use these tiny little mushroom heads that interlock with each other. They back it with a super bonding adhesive called VHB. As long as you clean and prep the surface you're bonding to thoroughly it's on for good. Here's a link for 3M (http://www.3m.com/reclosables/prod_guide/line.jhtml;$pageID$-rf-dual_lock)
I would recommend using Dual Lock Part No. SJ3551 with 400 stems per square inch. It will have a nice positive lock and won't have the matting problems of Velcro.

I used just a few strips of velcro to mount a 3 D Cell Maglight on the little lip below the rear window in the back of my ElCamino, I drive and turn FAST, and the sucker is heavy, and has never so much as slipped. I think velcro would work just fine.

And maybe a piece of hardwood as a backer. For heat.

Forgive me. I am for not knowing but doesn't the msd box get grounded through the case that its in or does it have a separate grounding wire coming out of it. I've seen them on different cars but never hooked one up.

427L88, flip it over and mount it to the cowl and fasten it with bolts, so its facing the heater box, if you remove the cowl you can access the fasteners http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

MSD's don't like to be mounted upside down either.Seem's I read where they should never be mounted upside down.

Yes, the heatsink will not dissipate properly if it's mounted upside down. Can't you just hide it somewhere on the backside of the core support? Seems I heard about that somewhere. The Chevelle's MSD is going on top of the glove box pod, with a couple of computer cooling fans fixed to the top of it.

Maybe the heatsink thinks its right side up? I would say its at a 45-60 angle and not totally upside down, I've never had a problem.

427l88 I not so sure about the velcro, my ashtry ends up in the back seat on a hard launch, curious if it holds up

I mounted mine between the battery and fender on my '69. It's pretty much hidden and the 12v wire is not very long and is connected to the "hot" terminal on the radiator core support. Wiring going to the coil, ignition, dist is wrapped in with other wiring crossing the firewall.

Von, thats my plan B. Up alongside the battery, right up near the headlights.

I really want it to be a stealth install so it looks like a stock points/coil setup.

BTW with a tripower you MUST use a small base distributor.

Stinger, I havent installed one in over 20 yrs, but recall that ground is done thru a wire not thru the case.

Thnx for the ideas guys. Still think I'm leaning toward Armandos trick product used under the dash.

Gene,
I've been in the electronics business for 30 years. Electronics last longer when allowed to run in a cool environment. If your'e concerned about reliability, run with Von and Tony's idea about mounting to the core support behind the battery. For steath purposes, paint it black or buy the GM version (More money) thats already painted black, and with the "GM" name on it might even look a little like factory. Or run a Crane HI-6 thats available in black. I run one (Crane) in my GP with no problems. Also, mounting the case to metal would enhance suppression of RFI to keep the tunes coming out of the radio nice and clear.

Gene,
I fabricated an aluminum bracket and mounted the 6AL behind the horns up under the drivers fender using the horn bolts to support the bracket. Routed the boxes ignition wires in convuluted tubing between the fender and inner. Ran the battery connections in the harness across the radiator support. Works great.

Gene,
A friend of mine has a Camaro with GM's CD unit. Part number is 10037378. He also has the rev limiter. He mounted it behind the battery and it looks factory mint, that is if you look hard enough to find it. Like Tino said, GM logo looks mint. I like it so much that I've decided to do the same.
