What is the process involved in switching out the gearing of a rear end? I wanna change from my 2.72's to maybe some 3.31's. What does it cost for a shop to do this. How much is the part?

You should probably have someone help you through it for the first time if you've never done one before.
Give these guys a call.

Randy's Ring-N-Pinion does good work but they're all ford guys. Even though they're right down the street from me, I still prefer doing buisness with Toms Differential.

I've built three rear ends myself, but I would rather pay someone else to do it. My wife made me promise that I'd never rebuild another rear end in the garage because the gear oil smells worse than a limburger chilly cheese dog fart http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif

Youll get used to the smell after awhile, most of a gallon container leaked out all over the back of my blazer. sorry not to answer the question, just thought I'd add that the stuff smells kinda good after awhile

Yeah but, when you smell that smell, you know you're into some real hardcore gearheaddin'!

Oooh ohh that smell..... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

OK, stdard rate, in the car, here in Buffalo is around 300. Around 200 out of car. I know a guy next town over that'll do it for 150 in car. Dont attempt yourself unless you;re a machinist and are adept at measuring and eyeballing a proper contact patch. Need dial indicator and a few other special tools.

EDIT: these are LABOR rates only!

It should cost you about $180 for someone to do a ring and pinion.

Just had a R&P set up from Tom's Differentials....no whining, no grinding, no fuss, no muss. I would always pay to have it done by a reputable place, I once had my gears done by a hack and the rear howled like a hyena.

Randy's Ring&Pinion did mine last year. They did a great job, totaly inspected the whole rear end assembly & worked with me to get exactly what i wanted. I've had no problems with it.

I acutally had them remove a series 4 carrier and gears & replaced with series 3. I had the old carrier sitting in my living room in a box for about 3 months till i sold it. At first I didn't like the smell, but then after I sold it- i kinda missed it. I'm still looking for a Glade Plug in with 90w scent. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Just call Tom's and tell him/them what you have and he'll give you an approximate cost. You have to remember, too, that if your rear end is original, you may need new bearings and maybe more. On one of my rears, one axle was bent and they are about $100 per. BTW, in case you don't know, you do have to take the rear out of your car and haul it over there. I know the prices there are high, I paid $325, but I had to make sure it was done right. There are other places in L.A. that do it cheaper.
