: Umbrella Seals necessary?

I just went from single springs to double springs on my big-block and I had to remove the umbrella seals on teh valvestems. Is this a wise thing to do? I would rather not tear down the motor to have the valve guides machined for teflon seals.

This is a bad thing. You need some sort of seal there.

It is only unwise if you remove them without putting something back. Check with your local head shop... I believe there are alternatives to umbrella type seals for use with dual springs, that do not require machine work.

You are screwed! Mr BillK tells me there are no seals that will fit when you swap the springs. So you have two choices, do crop duster imitations when you let off the gas or pull the heads and have your local friendly machine shop cut them for seals.

I beg to differ. When I went to LS-6 dual springs a few years ago, I bought positive seals that fit the stock '71 #820 heads. They came from Competition Products who advertises in National dragster. The seals have a 3017 on them.

Beg to differ all you like, that seal only works on the LS6 spring. The after market springs have a smaller inner diameter and the seal won't fit.

Here's an idea, call the guys that made the springs and ask them what seal you need to use?

I stand corrected.

A PC seal would require the guide be cut to accept the seal. If you have the heads off this is a no brainer. Use Crane, Manley, Perfect Circle whoever to get the job done. On the car with aftermarket double springs there are no seals like the stock umbrella seal or the LS6 seal made for that spring only. That LS6 seal only work with that spring and a specific retainer.

It would be nice to find out what spring we were talking about here.

Gee folks, I run the Crane #99893-16 duals with an inner id of 0.830 and I just put umbrellas on the exhausts. FelPros that Bill K recommended ( marine app). While they fit snugly, they sure did fit fine! Professional mechanic agreed all OK. All still intact after about 2000 miles.

( Bill BTW my oil consumption went from 1 QT every 250 miles to 1.5QT every 1600!! so we were defintely sucking oil through those exhaust guides.)

I used the umbrellas on the exhaust side ( where the builder had put none) and not the pc seals I have on the intakes because the pc's are almost too good. I wanted the exhausts to get some oiling.

I still have 1/2 a box of 'em at home if you need a P/N. Whats your inner spring id?
