My car has a hole in the firewall, nothing else. Would it be cheaper to buy a system from oldair.com or catch one of the complete setups that are selling here?

You didn't say what year or if it was a factory air car. I believe you will find that you will need the plenim box at a minimum for the Old air system of factory air. If it had factory air, restoring it seems like the best option to me.

Unless you are in a real hurry, look around at swap meets.

you just hit the jackpot for information!!!!, ok, i just installed an old-air under dash kit, the cost is only $725, but i had brackets that were "home made" so they weren't compatable and i had to buy all their brackets, i moved the alternator to the driver side (i wanted to anyway so this was a bonus) and used their p.s. brackets and compressor brackets, all quality stuff. now i also had to buy NEW gm pulley's and a new water pump cuz mine for some reason was too shallow (long pump) to hold the 2 groove pulley needed. so that was an extra $100 plus the brackets, total cost with charge was $1000 (more than i wanted to spend BUT, it's well worth it) the system cools the car's black interior great even in the hottest part of the day and is a 134a system. it's an ez install too especially if you don't need to do a lot of mods like i had to do.
now they also have a "hurricane" system which uses the existing vents/controls, but it's more pricey, and more work to install it. either way i think they have quality products and Great customer service. check my web page below for install pics info. or email me jk

i did http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif, i can't see trying to find all the parts, brackets. etc. and having to buy a rebuilt compressor, new dryer etc. when you can buy the kit with all this new and a warrantee to boot. i'll take some pics of my under dash unit to see if it's what you want, but on my web page it shows the under-hood part

I just finished my A/C system today and it works great. The car is a 70 with factory A/C and the system had been closed until about six months ago. I replaced condenser, hoses, dryer, expantion valve, and a POA 134 update kit. Hoses and POA update kit from old air products, other parts from GM. I reused compressor and evaporator. Local shop added ester oil and pulled it down then added 134. Blows cold, 44 degrees. Total cost about $850.00. You should be able to locate a parts car for the evaporator box and all misc parts you will need for a decent price.

I say go with the stock parts as much as possible. Besides, I don't think your heater or defroster will work without the correct underhood plenem box.
