Any thoughts on using Por 15??? Seems like they say you can paint right over rust????Wouldn't that not bond well??? and what about the rust you just sealed in??? and how good is it for a top coat??? does it last??? and now for the Million dollar question "Has anyone applied it a long time ago so we know how it holds up say 10, 15 years +

Cliff,
the stuff is awsome! Yes, you can apply it right over rust--this is NOT witch-brew! It really works. The key is following the directions carefully. Ideally you should use their metal ready, with places a zinc-phosphate coating on the rust, then the POR-15. But regardless, it can go directly over rust if you scrape the loose particles away.
I have heard stories of people using it and it lasts. One team cheveller awhile back posted he used some on trunk floor repair, and was still lasting close to 10 years later. I have used it and am very happy. I have even done my own "scientific testing". I took a piece of automotive sheet metal left over from my resto, scraped the s*** out of it to get nice bare, rough metal. I painted POR-15 Silver on it, let it dry, and then scratched the heck out that! Let it sit out for 2 winters outside. Proceded to spray Saleen solution (I wear contact lenses) on it (this stuff is super-saturated salt water). Etc etc. Rust on bare surfaces, but did not penetrate where the por was applied. Por did not rust. There was surface rust on the deep scratches on the POR, but did not "get" to the real good metal. It works, but you MUST apply it correctly and take your time!

Cliff, I've used the stuff on everything except an engine block with great success. Follow directions, and rust WILL sleep for ever. (Wrote a song about that, didn't they?)Good luck, Steve

The key is surface preparation and following the instructions to the letter. You can use other degreasers other than the stuff they sell, but I'm really refering to to the way the surfaced is prepped and the time between applying separate coats. Don't try to rush it. For best looking results, you should scrape all loose rust away with a wire brush or scotch brite pads, or even smooth the surface first with sandpaper.

I'm not sure *how* it works....I just know it *does* work!
Well worth the high price tag!
But yeah, I get as much rust off as I can!

I don't know about putting it over rust, I used the high temp orange on my newly cleaned and blasted heads. It went on easily and looks fantastic. I've only got a few hours on it, but it looks perfect right next to the exhaust ports.
