I wanted to clean up the firewall and framerails. Any suggestions for getting the grease off and making it look spic and span? Paint options...sheet of aluminum???

I'm no pro at this so hope you get another reply from someone who is!

Hot dishsoap, a final wipe down with alcohol, and then Rustoleum 7777. If I wanted the firewall to look cherry I would get out my Bondo and plug some holes as well.

Of course, polished alum looks mint. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Drag the whole thing outside and use simple green and a stiff brush withs lots of elbow work. Just have a compressor to blow out all the water before you move to the next step. Are you planning to "smooth" the firewall or just clean n paint?? I'd think a sheet of aluminum would stain n turn "cruddy" looking in a short time period... perhaps a nice sheet of stainless???

Just painted my firewall last nite. I have the whole front clip off though which makes it easier. Basically I pulled it out on the driveway soaked it with a good degreeser (Kleen Flo) sprayed it down and used a paint scraper& wire brush to reove the old paint etc. I sanded down the flat areas with sandpaper. I decided to use the POR-15 process to paint it and it looks good and should last a long time.

Actually I have some dings in my firewall does anyone know if bondo and POR mix? Or do I have to use POR putty?

Two Words - PRESSURE WASHER!

I kicked my own ass doing it without one, used easy off oven cleaner (check my site to see the pics) Be cautioned though, easy off will take the paint off, but would work mint (sorry Gene, I used your word again http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif ) with a pressure washer - try to get at least 2500 psi because 1500 is just a bit weak.

Tony - If I'm ever up in chicago again, I gotta see your car. My roomate is from Bloomingdale, how close or far is that from you?

Adam I really don't know where Bloomingdale is. I know the city very well but not the suburbs. I live near Midway airport. Let me know if your ever in the area. Later, Tony
