: Damn Tailpipes
nebulous Sep 19th, 01, 11:00 AM With headers xpipe, turbo mufflers and turn downs before the reared, I had a cool throaty sound that set off car alarms. I added tailpipes last weekend, to stop my trunk from vibrating, and not only does the car sound neutered, but acts it.
Does any one know a of a low restriction muffler that sounds deep like turbos, and will allow me to retain the tailpipes without losing performance ??
Flowmasters don't count. I have tried them and they make my engine sound like a V-Twin with gas...
onovakind67 Sep 19th, 01, 1:01 PM I just used generic turbo mufflers in my 2-1/2" exhaust system with full tailpipes. It could be that a quieter car feels slower, my car certainly doesn't feel as fast as it is. Do you have any e.t.'s to compare?

nebulous Sep 19th, 01, 5:07 PM Truthfully, no. I do believe the seat-o-the-pants feeling is discernibly slower, and I have a slight hesitation when I punch it in the 3k rpm area that wasn't there before.
I do think I will go back to my regular turbos minus the tail pipes.
Lonnie67 Sep 19th, 01, 11:16 PM I'll agree that it "feels" slower because of the sound. I'll almost bet that it will hit the same ET. The in car sound will be a lot quieter, but the outside sound might only be a little quieter. But then again. all cars are affected differently with the same stuff. Take it to the track.

2 1/2 in and out. Sound good and only 14 bucks apiece.

vettefella Sep 20th, 01, 7:49 AM I vote for the Dyna Max straight thru turbos. I first put a set on my 96 Impala SS, liked them, then put a set on my 72 Monte. Really liked them then, so I put a set on my 67 Elky w/2 1/2" and headers. With the 292 cam, the sound makes that seat-of-the-pants-feel almost as good as sex. With sound like that, who cares about what it'll do at the track.
River Bum Sep 20th, 01, 1:18 PM Magna-Flow and Eldlebrok (spell check) have straight through mufflers too. Less back pressure.

PS. I like my FLowMaster (70 series) !

NHRA1877 Sep 20th, 01, 4:51 PM anybody tried Flowmaster 40 series? how do they sound?
Mytmouse Sep 20th, 01, 5:23 PM I have a set of Magnaflow (14" body length Stainless Steel) muffler with 2" headers, 3" header pipe with 2.5" tails out the back and my car has a very deep throaty sound at cruize speeds that crackles loud at WOT. This is in my 67 SS stock 396/350HP motor. Sound will vary with other variables such as motor compression. I think these mufflers can only be purchased at a muffler shop unless they changed their marketing scheme. I went with stainless becasue the shop let me have them at his cost as he was doing the entire system for me. I have not been disappointed. I have flowmaster on my Z/28 and like that sound also but this is an altogether different sound. I looked at the muffler before they were installed and they were virtually straight through and in stainlees they look kewl too. Can see two shiny "cans" underneath from behind my car
Magnaflow has a web page and I think it is Magnaflow.com but I may be off some but you can do a search on your browser
BTW: They make them in the non stainless variety also and different lengths also. But remember the bigger the muffler the quieter it will be. My whole exhaust sytem was custom made and mandrel bent so size and length did not matter

Gene Chas Sep 20th, 01, 9:27 PM With the right muffler ( read: BIG) , tailpipes should only be a matter of sound preference, and not performance. Particularly with the X, which balanced out the pulses exceptionally well.
Presume that "V_Twin" sound is/was the Xpipe sound. I kinda liked it.
I ran a pair of Magnaflow 12578s in lieu of what were small two chamber mufflers. The big Magna's eliminated the Xpipe sound nearly altogether ( http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif ), but should be theroetically really reducing the pressure and heat as the gas goes through a tailpipe up and over the axle.
If you did not use mandrel bent pipes, then thats where the problem might lie.
BTW, I'm with onovakind, I fall prey to such deceptions as well. It felt faster with the tiny tin can muffler. Also, it felt jsut as fast when I went to a full exhaust ( 3.5"- 2.5" ) from two 2.5" pipes, Summit turbos and turndowns. But it was LOUDER with the full exhaust.
Yeah, my wife scratched her head at that one.

nebulous Sep 21st, 01, 3:05 PM The x-pipe acutally toned the V-twin sound down abit. The two-chamber flowmasters w/o the x-pipe actually sounded, I'm gonna get some heat here, like a 383c.i. Harley:
Blop, Blop, Blop, Blop, Blop...
I'm still not sure rather to try a set of magna flo in hope that they are loud enough, or get a pair of summit turbos and turn- downs; then paint my 65 yellow and black because the trunk is buzzing all the time.
