It can be done, but I wouldnt pay more than $75 for a 10 bolt open rear, $175 seems steep.

Look at it this way. $500 will get you a 12-bolt posi in the mid-west easily. Less money than that, you my have a fair deal. More than that, don't do it.

A Eaton posi will cost you about $350 new or around $200-$250 used. There is some shimming to do when changing it. You didn't say what year Chevelle you have, but be sure the 8.5 will fit it first.

I'm not sure, but I've read here before that the 8.5 from '73 and later will not fit in the '72 and older cars.

a 71 with its original rear should have a 8.2 10 bolt, and the 8.5 center will not fit.

But will the complete 8.5 fit the '71 Chevelle? I've been told it won't.

yep,if you can find a complete 8.5 rear from a chevelle or elcamino it will bolt in. They are not too common to find, since they are a one year only deal with the housing that fits(1972). The 73 up rears will not fit.

BE ADVISED, this is a repeat. The 73-later rear axle housings will not bolt into a 72-earlier chassis.

I totally realize how frustrating it can be when trying to find just what you are looking for. But be patient, it WILL eventually show up, just keep looking. A couple of years ago, I ran across a 69 in a salvage yard with a 3.07 12bolt posi for $100. I tore it down cleaned it up and 5 of the 6 bearings needed to be replaced for about $90.
A few months ago, I ran across a 70 Elky with a 2.73 non-posi 12bolt for $75. With a posi unit installed, this will make an excellent cruising/hiway rear for a BB car, because a BB will have plenty of torque to turn it.
I put the 3.07 in my 70 conv with a SB400/M-20 and it is a Perfect combo, especially on the interstate.
