Greetings,

I have always wondered if you could get a 396 in a non SS car in 70.

Reason I ask is I cannot find the build sheet for my 70SS and it has a numbers matching 396 and TH400. I think I found were the build sheet used to be (back side of drivers door panel. Looks like it was glued.)

How easy is it to re-stamp a motor and trans? They look original to me!

How can you tell if the vin has been tampered with? I'm just curious, my car has no signs of being a clone but without the build sheet its always on my mind.

Is there a partial VIN behind the heater box? Is it easy to find? Do you have to remove the heater box?

Sorry so many questions. This site is great!

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I can answer your first question Mike. The 396 (402 actually) LS-3 option, 330 HP was available and my source indicates a total of 2008 were produced in 1970.

There is an engine code stamped on the block. My build sheet is gone, but my engine code is CTX, which decodes as L34 396 w/4spd trans. This is my only proof that my car is an SS, as the L34 was only available on SS cars. (your VIN must also be on the block too). This also is assuming that my block is not a restamp. Theres no sure way to document it without buildsheets or prtectoplates or other documentation.
