I have a 65 with a small block and i want to replace the original metal fan shroud with a fiberglass one. I have heard that the shroud from a '66 will fit with minor modifications. Would that be from a small or big block car, and does that matter?

It would be from a small block. BB shrouds are much shorter than the SB shrouds.
