: Please help with my '67 BB power steering conversion...

I don't know what the heck I am doing wrong here. I have a '67 SS396 that I am adding power steering to, and I got this kit that Ground Up sells. The kit has them pump, brackets, hoses, hardware, etc. Well, I put the pump on the way I thought it should go, and nothing is lining up. I know I have the lower cradle bracket on right, that one is pretty idiot proof, but the pump is all the way out at the end of it's adjustment up at the bracket that attaches to the exhaust manifold. The pump hits the alternator, and I am using the stock cast lower alternator bracket, which as far as I know is the only one that was used in '67. I have a '67 assembly manual, and the diagram shown (which is the same that
Ground Up uses in there catalog), isn't doing me any good.

Does anyone have any good pics of the power steering set-up on a '67 BB with the remote resevoir system??

Hopefully someone here has a pic or some ideas, cause I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Steve

Do a search for Gene McGill on here. He had some good pics of the PS sys on a 68 SS(remote res just like 67). He used an old socket to space the upper bracket out from the exhaust(header) to give a little more space away from the alternator. I used this method on my 68 also. I would try to take the pics but I don't have time right now....
Good Luck.
EDIT I found his web page and here are the pics I was talking about. The pics are listed under help a little ways down on the left side of the main page.http://personal.riverusers.com/~mcphelps/genes68.htm
I hope they help.

ACE841 is correct you need a 1" spacer between the pump adjusting bracket and the exhaust manifold. This should angle the alternator enough to give you clearance that you need.

A 1" spacer with the stock manifolds?? How did the factory do it? I didn't see any spacers in the assembly manual, do you think these repo brackets are that far off? Does the alternator bracket have to come off to get the power steering belt on?

Well, those pics helped, got it mounted (less belt). Took some fitting till I got it. It still appears that the alternator would have to come off to put the power steering belt on, is this the case? The whole system looks like an engineering afterthought though. I can see why they changed it in '69.

I installed power steering on my 67SS this past winter. I have headers and a 3/4" spacer was required to position the small PS adjustment bracket correctly. There isn't much room for error as far as choosing the correct belt lengths to use. My alternator and PS pump have very minimal adjustment and it took a little trial and error before I arrived at the proper length belts. As far as things lining up, you need the correct "seperate" bolt on PS crank pulley to go along with the PS pump pulley. Once installed correctly it doesn't look bad at all! Mike, M22

I was mainly talking about the pump lining up with the small adjustment bracket to put the bolt thru. I had to do a little "massaging" to get it to line up. I attribute this to typical (read "poor") quality reproductions.

Do you have any suggestions on the belt length/part number?? I was going to get what they call out for stock replacement and the next length longer, then take the one that don't work back.

Thanks,
Steve

get a piece of 3/8 rope . wrap it around your pulleys the way you want your belt to go . pull it tight , mark it .lay it out flat measure it this should get you real close to the wright belt lenght. oh make sure you push in all the adjustment before you wrap the rope good luck !!!!! working on a bb 67 myself
