: 1970 SS-454, with 1971 "Lime Green" metallic ?

I just received an email from the owner of a '70 SS-454 (LS5). It appears that he has a genuine car, built in Canada, with paint code "43" ("Lime Green" metallic), which is a color not offered on Chevelles until the 1971 model year.

This car also has the option "D99". My books do not list this code, but I suspect it is a special-order color option, available only on Canadian-built cars.

The owner also claims to have the GM of Canada documentation showing the paint color 43.

Here are the codes, as emailed to me:

Pretty nice car with the special paint code and all but I like my 75 75 car better.

Dan did you ask him what his documentation says regarding production #s with LS5. Remember mine says 299. This would be interesting to find out.

I think I'll point the owner to this forum, then he can answer any questions that come up. He did mention the "two-tone" moldings. It sounds like perhaps his car came with the two-tone moldings, but mono-tone paint.

Brian,
does your cowl tag list the paint code as "5858", or is it "5810", or "1058" ??

A '70 wearing Lime Green paint sounds very similar to the 1970 Citrus Green. Here in Canada we did get a few more colours (like 18 vs. 15 in the U.S. on the 67s). I have also seen factory 1966 Canadian Chevelles wearing 1967 Plum Mist paint.
As for the production figures I have your great poster Dan. I'm not sure about Canadian Z15 production for '70, but I do know that for '69 there were 903 Z25 built in the Great White North.
Back in the 70's there was a Dark Jade '71 base Chevelle coupe in my neighborhood that had the D99 moldings (just the bright division molding on the sail panels). Also there briefly was a Citrus Green '70 Malibu sport coupe with a black vinyl roof that was written off in '71(how do I remember this stuff?)

Code 43-Citrus green was a new Spring color for the 1970 Nova.Along with Code 65-Hugger orange, and code 52-Sunflower yellow (Exclusive to Nova).I have a Brochure that came out in March of 1970 advertising these "Bright New Colors" to the Dealerships, along with the other colors available.
You see these colors on the 1970 Yenko Deuce Novas mostly, but were available for the Standard Nova,as well as the other cars.
If you new about them and the Dealer did as well, starting in Mid-March 1970 you could order these new colors on any of the Chevrolet cars,or GM line as well,But You paid extra for it.
I would imagine D99 helped signify the car was all one color. It is the U.S. code for two-tone paint.
I have seen this code frequently on other Canadian built cars from GM that were painted one color on top and bottom.Just the way the Canucks did things. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

The "Citrus Green" color looks just like the '71 "Lime Green" (both are code "43").

The "Nugget Gold" color looks just like the '71 "Placer Gold" (both are code "53").

Cam,
I believe that there were 299 '70 LS5 coupes built in Canada for the US market. The '69 Z25 total of 903 that you reported - is that the total number of Z25 cars built in Canada for the US market, or for the world-wide market ??

This is an issue that has made my production totals poster projects difficult. It is often hard to tell if these Canadian records refer to US export cars, Canadian market cars, or overseas market cars (or just total sales in Canada from US & Canadian-made cars).

I have also seen a '68 Oshawa built 442,that was white upper and lower with D99 trim.Remember Oshawa did some unusual things. You could get a Beaumont with almost any GM colour

The 2nd generation 70 1/2 Camaro was available in Citrus green (not sure of the paint code) so I guess it's not too much of a strech of the imagination to think that a Chevelle or two was special ordered in that color. And Mr.70 is correct about the colors on the Nova. The first new car I owned was a brand new 70 Nova that was Hugger orange, bought in June of '70.
