Since both ends of the wire are supposed to be at the same potential level when the light is extinguished, the faint light is probably nothing to worry about...I have seen this before, but it indicates that there is a voltage drop somewhere at one end. If the faint light gets brighter as more load is applied, like turning your lights on, it is indicative of an under sized wire lead to the fuse panel. This develops a voltage drop due to excessive current (can be due to a multiplicity of problems and/or issues)and you see a volt or two differential which is enough to illuminate the light.

What did you do with the abandon wire specifically the brown wire at the regulator?
As far as a new harness you can contact M&H (http://www.wiringharness.com)
You can order a harness specific to your needs. The A/C harness or lack of is separate and doesn’t change either under hood harness.

the car was like this when i got it. i have not looked for a brown wire, if i find a brown wire what do i do with it? right now there is on wire off the alternator to the battery. there is a orange wire behind the distributer that has been cut and i dont no where it goes. thanks

The original brown wire should not be going anywhere on the one-wire. It should just be taped back.
Where does the orange wite seem to come from? Is this a A/C or non-A/C car?

The GEN light gets power to one side when the ignition is on. The other side is a brown wire that is routed through the bulkhead connector to the voltage regulator. If the light “just barly glows” it’s likely caused by the brown wire having a high resistance path to ground. If the regulator is still in place and the wires connected it could cause it. If connected disconnect the wires/connector from the regulator and secure them so that none of the wires can contact ground. If the light still glows you can remove the bulb from the socket.
The orange wire behind the dist would have been used for the heater blower cars with factory A/C didn’t use this wire.
