: Shunt location???

I'm told that the amp gauge in a 67 chevelle is really a volt meter reading off a shunt. Does anyone know of the location of this shunt and/or what the amp rating and mV rating of the shunt should be. I would like to get my factory gauge working and I have access to many different shunts. Thanks M22

I'm not sure for your 67, but mine on my 64 was on the radiator support below the voltage regulator. I'm pretty sure that is where yours is also. I also would like to know the resistance reading for these currents shunts so I can replace my missing one and have a good gauge again.

I tested the amp gauge in a yet to be installed 67 gauge cluster. It indicates full scale with .1 V (one hundred milivolts). Since there is no value indicated on the gauge face I think 40 A full scale is reasonable. Using ohms law R=E/I. The resistance value for a shunt for this amp gauge will be. .1/40 = .0025 ohms. I have checked several electronic supply co., have not found a source for low value resistors. I’m not sure about 68 and 69, but in 70-72 the amp gauge did not have a shunt resistor. The power feed wire is used. The amp gauge is connected to the horn relay and the junction block next to the battery. This can be done with the 64 or 67. I recommend using a 20 gauge fusible link on each of the two wires.

I agree with Elree.

It's not well documenter but many Chevelles use the #10 red wire from the junction block behind the battery to the horn relay as the shunt.

Assuming 4.5 ft of #10 wire, the calculated resistance is .0050 ohms which would give 20 amps fill scale.

Be sure to use those #20 fusible links as Elree recommends. Otherwise you have unfused wires running behind your dash.

So what you guy's are saying is the amp gauge has one wire connected to the horn relay and the other wire connected to the junction block or to the battery thus reading the resistance through that length of wire?? I guess you would have to switch the wires around at the gauge if it indicated + amps when trying to start the car?? Why is this such a mystery?? Does anyone with a working amp gauge know where there wires go??

As stated above, 1 lead (black/white tracer) to the horn relay (It is actually in the harness on the fenderwell) and the other black only to the post near the battery on the rad support.
This is also near the same configuration in my 66 Vette.

I have a working amp meter on my '69 Elky.
