Not a Chevelle question, but it shouldn't make a difference.

Hey guys, my gas gauge has been broken since I bought my '86 Blazer 4 months ago.

It always rests on "E". When I first bought it I disconnected the boot connection under the driver-side door next to the frame. With the key in the "ON" position the needle pegged out at "3 o'clock" like it should. When I reconnected it the gauge seemed to work for one tank of gas and then the next fill up it stayed on "E" again.

Anyone have any ideas what the deal it? It has only worked on other time since then, and stopped again after the motor was shut off.

I am really hoping its not the sender, the local dealer wants damn near $300 for a new one. Not sure if its because its a Blazer or because I have the optional 31 gallon tank (instead of the standard 25 gallon). Either way that's a big chuck of change.

Any help is thanked in advance and welcomed.

I'd try disconnecting the sender lead back by the tank. See if the gage moves. Next ground that wire to a good ground. See if the gage responds. Try it a few times and that should give you and idea if it's the gage or the sender. If the problem is towards the sender, may want to check the sender ground connection.
