The other day, I noticed a whinning noise from the area around the alternator. From what I understand, this could mean that the alternator bearings are bad.

I guess my options are to have it rebuilt or get a new one. Whatever I do, I want to increase the output from stock. Having a numbers matching case is not important. I just want the most cost effective and reliable solution.

Should I go new or rebuilt? What options should I look for?

My opinion for what it's worth.
Buy the wiring adapter kit for a later model alternator. This saves you from cutting the harness and lets you go back to the existing style if you want to later.
Depending on what you add to the car, my choice would be to drop in a later internal GM unit. Here I can get a replacement at any time. Rebuilts or new? I've been lucky with rebuilts but you never know what you get.
