I have the old seperate regulator / alternator set-up. the dash light came on and soon after the battery went dead. I had the alternator tested and it was bad so I rebuilt it but the light stayed on and the battery soon there after died. The battery is new. Is it still effective to disconnect the negative while running and if it dies "its the alternator" or what.

Looking for help! thanks

Bad alt, killed the battery, common.

Check the wires running to the regulator from the alt. Might even throw on a new solid-state regulator. Check the conectors. Mine were green and corroded. I also had a broken wire at the regulator just in front of a fusable link. Not burnt, just green wire and broke.

I cleaned and resoldered every connection I chased from the alt to the regulator to the horn relay. Check the ground wires to the core suport and the screws on the horn relay (which is a common 12v spot).

Thanks for the help. Installed new regulator and I see what you mean about the fusable link... It had a very hard bend on the regulator side.

I will clean it all!!!
