I would like to correct some bad splices but am not sure what color wire goes where. And where do you get that cloth tape GM used?

I want to replace my resistor wire. Can I punch out the connector in the wiring harness without damaging it?

Why do you want to replace the resistor wire? What is wrong with it?

I want to look into putting in electronic ignition. Besides it is ugly and oil stained. the other wire that is melded with it is also ugly and spliced with a big ole wire nut. The rubber covering is cracking too on that one. I have a hei I might try it but I don't want a bunch of splices showing. The resitor wire goes all the way back to the housing that connects to the firewall block. I don't want to run a new wire back to my block thru my firewall, would rather make it look original and run it in the same wire group.

What you want to do is possible. You need to unplug the engine harness from the bulkhead connector. Remove the pin contact and replace the resistor wire. Don't solder a wire on to the resistor wire. It will cause problems later. If the harness is in poor shape and you have a couple of dollars, order a new one from M & H. Think they charge around $25.00 more to customize the engine harness to HEI. Then the harness will be new and look factory. http://www.wiringharness.com/

I think that is going to be a lot of money. I ordered the catalog though. There is just a few wires here and I suspect I can make it look factory. If I could just find that cloth tape somewhere local.

I have taken off the bulkhead connector. I managed to get the pin out. I was able to get the wire out of the connector and now I can sorder to the part that is the clamp that holds the wire on. I can't get all the resistor wire out. Will that little bit in there matter?

You will be fine as long your solder joint connects the wire to the pin and not just to the resistor wire. Special "harness tape" is sold through some of the restoration companies. May be more of a plastic than a cloth. Never bought any but regular electricians tape falls off. May ask someone in the restoration forum for a source for the tape.

That gm tape you are looking for is at any homecenter like lowes or homedepot or a electric supply store. It is called friction tape. Don't use it to cover a bare wire, it is only used to cover a group of wires. It is a cloth stickey tape and will withstand heat and oil better than just regular electrictions tape.
