I bought an M&H engine wiring harness for my 70. The bulkhead connector was enclosed in plastic and it had this black goop on it. I am assuming this is supposed to be for rust protection?

Anyway, assuming this is common, whats the best way to remove this gunk? Or is it supposed to be there?

It's supposed to be there, you are right it is there for corrosion protection.

So am I supposed to get rid of it or does it also protect from corrosion while its installed? If so, what is the recommend method of removing it?
