Forgot to disconnect the battery in a car with a known short (whoops) and now it reads 0 volts. My charger won't charge it unless it's above 4 volts.

Can I connect it to another battery with some jumper cables for a bit to bring it up above 4 volts? I figured I'd ask before I blow up my garage smile.gif

It all depends on how long the battery was dead for. The best rule of thumb is, if it is left in a dead discharged state for any length of time, its junk, so at this point, you do not have any other choice. go ahead & try your idea & put it on a high charge to get the electrolyte going for a maximum of an hour, then go to a trickle charge. Remember to charge it when the battery is at room temperature & have it in a real well ventilated area.

A charging battery gives off hydrogen gas ( very explosive ) so be VERY VERY careful. Keep it WELL AWAY from an open flame such as a pilot light in a gas hot water heater or clothes dryer etc.

Be very careful! Hope this helps.

Also depends on battery make. I've pulled Interstate batteries out of vehicles with bad alt. and topped off the water, put 'em on a charger overnight. Nice 3-5 amp charge 12-15 hours and they last another 2-3 years at least. Kragen battery, forget it. It's junk. Old Diehard's are good too, new one's, junk. Just my 2cents(from experience)
