You know, my original 283 starter off my 67 still worked mint till the day I pulled the engine out in 2001. (It was 34 years old at that time.)

I have yet to see a reman starter go longer than 2 years. Anyone care to explain?

What kind of luck have you guys had?

Having starter trouble Mike? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif You know, I've had trouble in the past with the cheap rebuilds from the discount places (rhymes with furry's) and places like that. There is a parts store/garage right by where I live that rebuilds them. Last starter I needed for my 68 I got there, it was $26 +core. (Murrays wanted $80) That starter is still going strong! And I've even given it a good cooking with the headers and idling around in traffic for several summers. I think I've had 3 or 4 starters on my '67 in the last 12 years. Some lasted longer than others. I should have bought new, but when the reman offer a lifetime warranty and the new offers a year and their cheaper, I'd always go with the reman. I have had bad luck with remanufactured starters and alternators also. I think the quality of the cheap units is just BAD. They use you for quality control - after all; they will cheerfully give you another, but it is YOUR hours under the car they don't cover.
I am planning to purchase higher quality stuff the next time I need one.

Sore subject! Most of the cheap rebuilds don't last more than 3 years. I had a "True Blue" from Pep Boys last me 8 years in my GP (Daily driver at the time). I replaced it with a cheap rebuild that I've gotten 4 years, but the car isn't used much and now needs another one. I bought a good rebuild from my local independent parts house to replace it with. My friend and I used to do repairs on the side many years ago and those cheap starters only would last 2-3 years. You get what you pay for. Stick with the good old local parts places instead of the big national chains and I think you'll do ok. They can't afford too many comebacks. JMHO.

I've got a good relationship with the local auto parts store. They warrantied the starter. Actually, when I asked him if they sold a lifetime warranty starter as opposed to the three year deal I had, he said, "I'll take care of you." I took that to mean that its one of those informal lifetime warranties http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thanks for letting me know about the place you trade with. May just have them rebuild one for me later this year. Nice to have an extra! We'll have to talk about it when we get together when the weather gets nicer.

My starter was on the car when I bought it in '96, and other than the typical "heat soak" symptoms when I first installed headers, it's never missed a lick.

I wish I knew where it came from so I could get them there in the future.

Somehow I don't think it's the original 35 year old starter. Too many other things had already been changed out. Is there a number that would tell whether it's the original or not?

There is a stamped number on the case. Date code is the same it would be say, on an alternator.
