I'm using short pieces of wire 8" to 18" to install aftermarket gauges to the stock wire harnesses electrical plugs. The gauge directions say use 18 gauge. I’m using 16 and 20 gauge, also one major ground from the gauges to the firewall is 12 gauge my decision.

Am I building up too much resistance in the system for the gauges to work?

Don't worry about it. The changes to their recommended size won't hurt. Going bigger is never a problem. The change from 18 to 20 AWG won't matter.

For most folks it don't matter to them, they use what ever is handy in the garage, but for myself, I would use nothing lighter than 18ga, Perfect for all conections and power to the guages!
