I just took out the engine harness from my 69 Elky to do some repairs. There is one wire that was hanging loose and not connected to anything. None of the wiring diagrams in the shop manual or assembly manual identify it. HELP!.It is a 10 or 12 guage pink wire that comes out of the same connector at the bulkhead that the 20 guage resistor wire that hooks up to the coil comes out of.(run on sentence?). It has a slip on connector and a fabric loom covering it. It looks like the temperature sending unit wire but that wire is connected to the sender and is part of the lighting harness! I can tell that this is a factory wire and not an add on by a previous owner. What gives? Thanks, Scott!

Don't know if this helps or not. But the only pink wire I see at the bulkhead connector IS] one side of the resistor wire. The other side engine side turns to 20 guage white\orange\purple which goes to the coil.
In other words it looks the 12guage pink wire is going to the bulkhead connector and comes out of the bulhead connector as the 20 guage coil wire.
The pink wire I'm looking at originates at the ignition switch so you might test it to see if it
gets hot when the keys on and no when its off. You could also run a continutity check on the wire to the igntion switch (unplugged) and verify its the same wire. I'm actually looking at a 68 diagram but its likely the same...

Perhaps the Idle Stop Solenoid wire. It's not shown on all drawings but I think 69 was the first year it was used. I'm pulling that out of my hat.
If I'm right it ties to the same bulkhead pin as the resistor wire.

Its a 10 or 12 guage wire , I think too heavy for an idle stop solenoid wire, and what about the fabric loom over it? Any possibility this was for the optional engine block heater option ko5? Non original engine so no other clues.

I think John's right.

I have a 69 engine harness that is in such good condition I thought it was a reproduction, doesn't look like it spent 30+ years under a hood. It has the pink wire mentioned. I assumed it was requested by the buyer to be used for an HEI but still retain the stock resistor wire setup. Now I know it's an original harness and the pink wire is most likely for a idle stop solenoid. It is the right length, the black fabric sheath would protect the wire lying across the top of the engine, and the car did have an automatic trans. Just don't know why it would be 12 ga. wire, as the same wire for 70 is 20 ga wire.

It would be a good wire to use for an HEI dist.

The optional block heater runs on 115 AC. I see them all the time here in the Phoenix area. :D

My 69 has the same wire. It's for the idle stop solenoid. Since the 2 BBL carb on the 307 no longer has one on it, I kinda left it dangling behind the engine. I need to find one so I can hook it up.

Tom, I have one in my tool box,I don't know if it is the correct one, I'll bring it to the meeting on Sat. Does the Olds parts car have the refrig lines on it still?

Just put yourself on as a manufacturing guy on the floor of the harness supplier. The only pink gage wire was a large wire gage...so they used what they had on the rolls. Following year they got the right stuff. Think the solenoid was added for the 69 year model. May have been a last minute decision.
Know what you mean about warming the car in the morning. Wish I had one of those heater seats. Too chilly for me.

My car has this pink wire also, due to the fact this wire really goes to nothing.
I assume it is swithced, and being it is 12 guage, doesnt that make it a good wire for under hood assesories? fans,lites.......ect.?

T.C. I've heard it being used to operate a HEI distributor.

That would work or an MSD or .......?
